In an era of collegiate sports entrenched in scandals, performance-enhancing drugs and DUIs, it is rare to find an off-the-field story worthy of sharing.

Be sure to spread this one.

On September 17, Dom Tiberi, legendary sports director of WBNS-TV in Columbus, Ohio, lost his daughter to a car crash in Hillard, Ohio, a large suburb of Columbus. His daughter, Maria Elizabeth Tiberi, attended The Ohio State University and was 21 years old.

The Saturday following the accident, the Ohio State Buckeyes honored Tiberi’s loss with a moment of silence before the 76-0 trouncing of Florida A&M.

Tiberi has been covering the Buckeyes for the CBS affiliate WBNS-TV since 1981. The bond that the Buckeyes developed with him was on full display when he returned to the sidelines as the No. 4 Buckeyes took on the No. 23 Badgers at home.

Following the dramatic 31-24 win over the Badgers, dozens of Buckeye players and personnel hugged Tiberi in an emotional three minute parade of heartache.

No scandal, no controversy. Just student athletes taking it upon themselves to show their support for a grieving and beloved man who has meant so much to The University.

If there’s one thing that coaches don’t like, it’s phones ringing during their press conferences . Just two weeks ago, UCLA coach Jim Mora blew up and walked out of a presser when a camera operator received a call while he was answering questions.

Today at Northwestern, a phone rang during Pat Fitzgerald’s press conference, but he took it all in stride. Fitzgerald answered the call, politely told the caller that he’d have to call back, and left him with a “Go ‘Cats.”

Here’s the video — it’s pretty funny:

Northwestern hosts Ohio State this Saturday as ESPN’s College GameDay comes to town — Fitzgerald has more important things to worry about that accidental phone rings.

Just over two weeks ago, Orangebloods.com reported that University of Texas athletics director DeLoss Dodds would be stepping down at the end of the year. At the time, a UT spokesman commented and said the reports were “absolutely not true.”

Today, the Austin American-Statesmen is reporting that Dodds will step down next August, and will make an announcement about the move tomorrow.

Per the Statesman :

“Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds will announce Tuesday afternoon that he will step down next August after 32 years in the position, three well-connected sources told the American-Statesman on Monday.

Dodds, 76, will announce his retirement after vigorously denying a report earlier this month that he would leave his job before the end of this year. Dodds will stay on through Aug. 31, 2014, and will remain on as a consultant through 2015.”

We’ll keep you posted as more comes out.

Hopefully West Virginia fans have calmed down a bit — the rioting after the upset win over Oklahoma State got pretty intense . Now we all get to find out if WVU is a one-hit wonder in 2013, or if they have suddenly turned the corner, as they face the Baylor Bears this weekend. Baylor has yet to be tested, and has been arguably the most impressive team so far this season. We’re hoping this one is quite a battle.

Today, Baylor released a promo video for the upcoming game:

Not only is Arizona State-Notre Dame going to be a great game this weekend as part of the Shamrock Series for the Fighting Irish, but it’s also going to be a serious fashion show. Yesterday, the Sun Devils began teasing a new uniform for the matchup, but just revealed a new helmet at today’s press conference — here it is:

There’s no doubt that you’ve heard by now that USC fired head coach Lane Kiffin in the wee hours of yesterday morning — in the parking lot of the airport following the team’s arrival home from the ASU game. It was a moment that the entire college football world was waiting for for quite some time.

Of course, such a moment requires one of the fantastic Taiwanese animation videos that are always well done by Next Media Animation. Here is the newest masterpiece, complete with new English commentary:

Earlier this morning, it was announced by UConn that it’d be firing head football coach Paul Pasqualoni (and offensive line coach George DeLeone) following the squad’s first 0-4 start since the early 1990s. Huskies fans, many who have been calling for the move since the end of last season, have been cheering the decision. Apparently some of Pasqualoni’s players are as well.

Jory Johnson started at linebacker for the Huskies every game in both 2011 and 2012. He made it clear how he felt about Coach P’s firing this morning:

Apparently Johnson isn’t the only one who feels this way. Check out what The Daily Campus’ Tim Fontenault just tweeted out regarding the current players:

I’m sure we’ll see more fallout as the day goes on. We’ll keep you updated.

Heads are starting to roll. Over the weekend, USC fired head coach Lane Kiffin after a lackluster 3-2 start. Monday morning, UConn followed suit, letting go of both Paul Pasqualoni and offensive line coach George DeLeone, the school announced today via its website. AD Warde Manuel had this to say:

“I am making this change in our football coaching staff now as we approach the conference season to see an improved performance from our football program,” said Manuel. “I am disappointed in the record of our team thus far, but I am confident that our coaching staff and student-athletes will continue to work hard to improve and that will be reflected on the field of play as we start our American Athletic Conference season.”

More to come.

Arizona State is coming off a big win against USC last night that led to the firing of Lane Kiffin, but the Sun Devils have to stay focused on the road ahead — they don’t have an easy matchup next week. ASU will had to Arlington to take on the Fighting Irish as part of Notre Dame’s annual Shamrock Series.

Notre Dame already released special uniforms for the event, and the helmets in particular were very nice. Now, ASU is revealing new uniforms for the game bit-by-bit via Twitter — here are the new socks and fancy sleeves that the Sun Devils will wear this weekend:

Around the country, Morgantown, West Virginia is notorious for its intense postgame celebrations following wins for the Mountaineers. The WVU student body often riots, burns couches , and gets pretty reckless after big victories.

Saturday brought another of those victories, as West Virginia defeated Oklahoma State 30-21 — of course, that meant that students were lively in the downtown area all night.

And not in the best way.

In this video taken last night, students can be seen flipping over a car near the Life Sciences Building downtown (language NSFW):

And here’s a little more general rioting from yesterday (more NSFW language):

A little too much, huh?

At the end of the day, there are just some people who make the whole student body look bad — this kind of stuff should probably get toned down just a bit.

College football fans were treated to a spectacular slate of games yesterday, which featured numerous matchups between ranked teams. Of course, that means that there was automatically going to be some shakeup in the polls.

The biggest upset of the week has to go to West Virginia, which the pollsters responded to by dropping Oklahoma State from No. 11 to No. 21 following the game. Notre Dame and Wisconsin also found themselves falling in the poll, dropping out of the Top 25 after losing to Oklahoma and Ohio State, respectively.

Orgeron will take over as interim head coach after being an assistant head coach under Kiffin — remember, he tried to dub USC ‘Linebacker U’ this past summer. Orgeron was the head coach at Ole Miss from 2005-2007, when he accumulated a 10-25 record in Oxford.

It appears that USC fans aren’t the only ones in college football who are ready for a change — Trojans supporters got their wish earlier this morning with the firing of Lane Kiffin , and plenty of other fans would like to see moves made at their schools as well.

At Notre Dame, it isn’t the head coach who is under fire from the fans, but the quarterback, Tommy Rees. Rees has had a much-maligned career during his time at the university — some fans fondly refer to him as “Reesus” , yet he has also received more flak than any player in recent Irish history, earning himself another not-so-flattering nickname, ‘Turnover Tommy.’

The reality appears to be that Rees is a good, but not great, quarterback who can both heroically win or painstakingly lose his team games on any given Saturday. The unfortunate part for Irish fans is that there is currently not a signal-caller on the roster who is better prepared to win now.

Regardless, some fans are upset — very upset. One fan even went as far to create a petition last night, asking Obama to intervene with Notre Dame football by benching Tommy Rees. Wouldn’t that be something.

We have a feeling that this one won’t get much traction.

Update: The players reportedly left the field due to a policy change that occurred two years ago (Notre Dame did not lose a home game last season) — apparently the student body didn’t get the memo:

Earlier: This evening, Notre Dame suffered its second defeat of the season, falling to the Oklahoma Sooners 35-31. The loss obviously stings for the Irish, as it officially puts an end to any dreams of a return to the BCS National Championship game.

The players, predictably, were very upset after the game. So upset that a large number of them decided to skip the postgame singing of the alma mater — a sacred tradition at Notre Dame, win or lose. As a portion of the team decided to “opt out” of ritual, boos cascaded upon them from the student body:

Losses are certainly frustrating, but players in the past (including many on this team) found a way to battle through the pain to sing with the student body that supports them unconditionally. It’s easy to see why the students voiced their displeasure.

Earlier today, the Miami Hurricanes beat South Florida by four touchdowns. Afterward, Miami QB Stephen Morris was not happy, saying that he wished the Canes would have dominated even more. He also had some serious complaints about South Florida’s sportsmanship.

Per the Palm Beach Post :

“South Florida’s a dirty team. When you’re down and tackled and everyone’s on top, they’re going to try to go for your ankles. We were up three, four touchdowns. Ain’t no point for me to mess with these guys who are going to play dirty.

It is what it is. I wanted to score 70 points on them. They disrespected us, so I had no respect for them. At that point, I felt like we should just keep pushing it, keep killing them.”

South Florida is now 0-4 on the year and maybe players were venting some frustration on the field today. Either way, attempting to injure other players is not cool, frustrated or not. You can read all of Morris’ comments here .

Whatever momentum Boston College had against Florida State is all but gone at this point. Hey, it was bound to happen right – that BC would eventually be the victim of a Hail Mary?

Earlier this week, Notre Dame declared this week’s matchup vs. Oklahoma a “Wear Green” game as a promotion for the Kelly Care’s Foundation on behalf of the Leprechaun Legion. While this sounds pretty normal — after all, plenty of schools block the stadium in one color, it’s something that just doesn’t occur in Notre Dame Stadium.

It appears that many Irish fans weren’t on board with the move — check out this aerial from the NBC broadcast:

Not only did Notre Dame fans not show up in green, but Oklahoma fans traveled well — ouch.

West Virginia may have produced the most surprising result of the day thus far. After getting thrashed at the hands of Maryland last week, 37-0, the Mountaineers turned it on this week against No. 11 Oklahoma State, ultimately pulling off a huge upset, 30-21. Even West Virginia superfan (and country music star) Brad Paisley was surprised. He’s calling for some couch burning as a result.

West Virginia fans, who have been known to light a piece of furniture or two on fire in celebration, are probably going to get rowdy tonight. It’s well-deserved.

This is not the start the Fighting Irish had in mind for the matchup between No. 22 Notre Dame and No. 14 Oklahoma. On the third offensive play of the game, Tommy Rees was hit in the pocket while throwing, and the lame duck pass conveniently landed right in the waiting arms of Oklahoma’s Corey Nelson.

Nelson then took it to the house for six. Here’s video:

Tommy Rees then threw another interception on the following series. Oklahoma leads 14-0 early.

To say that things didn’t really go well today for USF would be an understatement. The Bulls were dismantled by Miami, 49-21, in a game that wasn’t even as close as the score indicates. The low point came near the end of the first half, when sophomore punter Mattias Ciabatti let off – wait for it – a 2-yard punt. ESPN felt compelled to add blooper music to the background of the highlight.

Maybe he figured Miami was going to score anyway and he felt like getting it over with?

The Miami Hurricanes were absolutely dismantling the South Florida Bulls this afternoon, so the ESPN cameras decided it would be more interesting to follow the mascots.

The bad thing for USF fans? Rocky the Bull was getting embarrassed by Sebastian the Ibis in the same manner:

Stay on the bus , Bulls fans.

A.J. McCarron just does all of the right things. He doesn’t get in trouble off the field, he wins championships, and he dates a supermodel too — doesn’t sound like a bad life to me. Today, he’s again make a really nice move, this time by honoring a 17-year-old girl who was in a car crash this past week.

Olivia Mills passed away this morning — she had been in a medically-induced coma following a car accident on her way home from church last Sunday in Northport, Alabama. Mills was very well-respected in her community, and since the accident, over 40,000 people have shown support for Olivia on a “Prayers For Olivia Mills” Facebook page .

Word of her story reached Alabama’s McCarron, and he is wearing purple today in her honor:

What a nice gesture by A.J.

North Carolina went all out for Military Appreciation Day, turning both the team’s uniforms and the playing field into impressive patriotic displays. Apparently some of its fans wanted to get in on the action too.

One UNC supporter went as far as to don a Captain America costume and a stars/stripes Speedo. I’m not sure this is what the Tar Heels were thinking when they asked fans to show their American pride.

Hopefully it doesn’t get too cold in North Carolina today.

Hold your breath, South Carolina fans. Senior quarterback Connor Shaw injured his shoulder in the middle of the first quarter of today’s matchup against UCF and had to be taken to the locker room. Shaw’s injury came on a read option play in which he landed awkwardly after being tackled. To make matters worse, he also fumbled the ball. Check it out:

Shaw has had shoulder trouble before – as recently as last September. Hopefully the injury isn’t too serious.

It’s not often that teams surprise us with new uniforms on game day anymore, but Oklahoma State kept a serious secret this week. Today, when the Cowboys took the field against WVU, they were sporting new white helmets with the “Phantom” version of Pistol Pete — they are pretty nice:

Maybe Oklahoma State is embracing the role of the villain after Sports Illustrated revealed its dark side ? I kid, I kid — and seriously, the new helmets are pretty cool.

Lane Kiffin is no stranger to facing criticism — there’s no question that he is on the hot seat. Today, of course, his name was brought up on ESPN’s College GameDay show as a topic of discussion. Paul Finebaum had some pretty harsh criticism of Kiffin, ultimately comparing him Miley Cyrus — “very little talent, yet we can’t keep our eyes off of him.”

Kiffin and USC have a big game tonight against Arizona State — that game kicks off at 10:30, and we’ll be watching.

SEC football fans never cease to amaze. Earlier this month, we showed you a crimson-painted poodle with the Alabama “A” logo shaved into its back — we figured it was one instance of a crazy college football fan going too far. But in fact, the poodle has company! Today, we have found another fancily decorated dog, courtesy of LSU fans:

Who’s next? We’re looking your way, Tennessee.

Back in July, we showed you a leaked photo of gold chrome helmets for the Washington Huskies that basically set the world on fire. They were shiny, they were sleek, and they were way different than any other lids that Washington has donned before:

We knew that the helmets existed, and Steve Sarkisian confirmed that they would be worn at some point this upcoming season. Earlier this week, news broke that the blinding gold brain protectors would be worn this weekend against Arizona:

Both Washington and Arizona are an undefeated 3-0 heading into the matchup — is it safe to say this game is for the gold?
