Video: Maryland’s Jake Layman Drives Baseline, Dunks On Virginia Tech’s Trevor Thompson

It hasn’t been a very good year so far for the Virginia Tech basketball team. This afternoon, the Maryland Terrapins came into Blacksburg and had their way with the Hokies, coming away with an 80-60 win. Not only did they win by a big margin, but they had their share of highlight reel plays too that the Hokies aren’t going to want to see again when watching film.

One of those plays came from Jake Layman, the Terps’ 6-foot-8 sophomore forward. Layman drove baseline during the second half and threw down a thunderous jam on Trevor Thompson:

Kentucky freshman superstar Julius Randle is probably on a number of posters in Lexington, but he’s probably not used to being on this side of things. Missouri’s Jabari Brown had a huge game, with 33 points on 10-of-17 shooting, including this big dunk on the freshman phenom Randle.

Unfortunately for Brown, Missouri fell to Kentucky 84-79 in a tight game between two of the SEC’s top teams. Randle put together his own solid performance, with 18 points and nine rebounds in the win.

Syracuse fans are absolutely stoked for tonight’s big matchup with the Duke Blue Devils. The Orange currently sits at 20-0 and No. 2 in the country in its first year in the ACC, and defeating perennial powerhouse Duke would be a big-time statement to the rest of the league.

We’ve already shown you how excited ‘Cuse fans and alumni are — from the local buses to the vice president of the United States, everyone and everything is showing support against Duke. And today, we’ve come across some pretty hilarious signs for the game — ESPN’s College GameDay show was on-hand this morning, and the game will be broadcast on ESPN at 6:30 EST:

And of course, there always has to be at least one very suggestive sign in the mix:

We should all be in for a real treat tonight.

Wisconsin and Ohio State entered today’s game as two teams amidst really bad stretches. Wisconsin had lost four of five after opening the season 16-0, while Ohio State had dropped five of its last six games. Down the stretch, neither team looked like it wanted to win.

With about eight seconds left with Ohio State up one, Lenzelle Smith Jr. received the ball on a fast break, but missed a lay-up, and travelled after getting bumped by teammate Amir Williams while corralling the offensive rebound, giving the Badgers one last possession. The Badgers failed to get a decent look, however, and had to resort to this well-defended three pointer from Sam Dekker, which bricked off the backboard, securing a big road win for Ohio State, 59-58.

College basketball fans across the country were mesmerized back in 2011 when the VCU Rams made a ridiculously improbable run from the First Four in Dayton to the Final Four in Houston. Never had such a feat been accomplished, and Shaka Smart’s squad came from nowhere to make it happen.

That season has been a program-changer for VCU, and a new documentary covering the NCAA Tournament run by the Rams has been in the works, titled “Unbelievable Is Believable, Here.” It now can be purchased online in its entirety — you can check out the official trailer below:

In a game against Ankeny Centennial, Waukee forward Nate Gehrig threw down a monster fastbreak dunk:

Gehrig would finish with nine points in a 58-49 Waukee win, but what a loud nine points they were.

Back in December, Notre Dame picked up a big early commitment for the class of 2015 in four-star center Tristen Hoge of Pocatello, Idaho. Hoge is the nephew of ESPN analyst Merrill Hoge, and matches his big body (6-foot-5, 287 pounds) with a serious mean streak — he should be a great building block for the future of the Fighting Irish.

Hoge is believed to be a very solid verbal commitment, and he recently got his Ford Raptor SVT tricked out in a new wrap, courtesy of his parents. Instead of the classic “Built Ford Tough” motto, his truck displays “Built Irish Tough” — a perfect fit:
