Coach K is not just a coaching legend anymore — his self-proclaimed street cred has gone through the roof.
This past weekend, Krzyzewski gave a speech to a group of students at Duke’s Annual Basketball Campout, and he told one absolutely incredible story in particular, when he went to a Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year dinner where he had to give a speech to introduce none other than LeBron James. Here are the hilarious takeaways:
- LeBron asked Coach K to introduce him at the dinner, and told him he’d need Coach to “talk him up” for at least 10 minutes
- He got a chance to meet LeBron and “all his boys”
- Coach K is sitting, waiting for this event to start, and two seats are empty next to him. Coach K wonders “who the hell would miss this thing and be late?”
- Jay-Z and Beyonce walk in late, come sit down. Rapper introduces himself as “Jay”, Coach wants to respond “I’m K” but gets scared
- Coach K is madly in love with Beyonce. “My three daughters and my wife of 44 years know it. They’re not worried. Just because I’m still competitive, I think there’s a shot in hell, I mean, something might happen [...] you’ve always got to think you can win.”
- Coach K jokes that he wants to ask Jay-Z “have you ever heard of boy-girl-boy?”
- He eventually gets the courage to ask Beyonce for a photo, in which he says he looks sheepish like a 12-year-old
Basically, the whole thing is hilarious — you will absolutely love the way Krzyzewski shares it:
