Mack Brown Says President Bill Powers, AD Steve Patterson Wanted Him To Stay On As Texas Coach

Back and forth we go. Earlier this week, it was reported that Mack Brown would step down as head coach at Texas. Friday night, after Alabama head man Nick Saban signed a contract extension with the Crimson Tide (many believed he would be offered by UT), it was reported that Brown would remain with the program. But Saturday afternoon, Brown officially resigned in Austin. What gives? Well, we’re starting to hear some answers.


Brown, speaking on the Longhorn Network this afternoon, told reporters that he met with school President Bill Powers and AD Steve Patterson on Friday afternoon and that they all agreed that he’d stay on. But after talking to his wife about the decision, he changed his mind by Saturday morning. Here’s what he had to say:


Brown spent 16 years as head coach, so he’s certainly earned the right the decide his own future. No word yet on whether he’ll resume his coaching career elsewhere, or if he’ll hang up the clipboard.
