Could the extra point soon be a thing of the past in the NFL? Commissioner Roger Goodell says that one of the goals for the league moving forward is to “add excitement to every play” – PATs have been hit at a rate of 99.1% in the past ten years, according to the NFL.

Goodell says that one league proposal suggests that touchdowns count as seven points in the future Here’s what he told Rich Eisen on the NFL Network regarding the subject.

“There’s one proposal in particular that I’ve heard about. It’s automatic that you get seven points when you score a touchdown, but you could potentially go for an eighth point, either by running or passing the ball, so if you fail, you go back to six.”

In short, the 2-point conversion would still exist, but if teams choose not to try it, they’ll be awarded the extra point for free.

While the idea sounds weird, it definitely makes sense. Fans don’t really care about the extra point unless it’s missed, and that happens very rarely. Don’t be surprised if this idea has legs.
