Report: Jeremy Pruitt Leaving Florida State For Georgia

Dan Lyons

Jeremy Pruitt’s Florida State defense was dominant in 2013, finishing first among all FBS teams in scoring, surrendering only 12.1 points per game. Seminole fans were excited by the prospect of the defense getting even better with another year in Pruitt’s Nick Saban-inspired system, but it appears that they will not get that chance.

ESPN reports that Pruitt has come to an agreement with Georgia to become the Bulldogs defensive coordinator just weeks after winning a National Championship at Florida State:

Pruitt, a former Alabama assistant, will earn $850,000 annually at Georgia, according to people familiar with the search. Pruitt made $500,000 at Florida State this past season but was expected to receive a significant raise after helping the Seminoles finish 14-0.

Pruitt’s ascent in the coaching ranks is very impressive, as many viewed his hiring at Florida State as incredibly risky due to his lack of coordinator experience. It is also interesting that he left despite the fact that Florida State would have likely bumped his salary. Don’t be surprised if Jimbo Fisher tries to keep the momentum going by hiring another Saban understudy.

This move can’t be very popular with everyone at FSU:

Unnamed #FSU assistant tells me, “I’m sick to my stomach….I loved working with Pruitt.”
