Video: Here Is Digger Phelps’ Speech As He Was Inducted Into Notre Dame’s Ring Of Honor
Today, former Fighting Irish head coach Digger Phelps received the greatest honor a Notre Dame basketball figure can receive — he was inducted into the school’s basketball Ring of Honor on the 40th anniversary of the 1974 victory over UCLA that ended the Bruins’ monumental 88-game winning streak . During halftime of Notre Dame’s game against Virginia Tech, a banner featuring Phelps’ name was raised to the rafters, and Digger had a chance to speak the crowd — he said he had prepared for this speech for a month:
Digger racked up a 393-197 record as the head coach of Notre Dame, and led the Irish to the Final Four in 1978. He is the sixth person to be inducted into the Ring of Honor, joining Luke Harangody, Austin Carr, Ruth Riley, Adrian Dantley, and Skylar Diggins.
