As far as fan-made signs go, this one is right up there with the best we’ve seen this year. A few Duke students created a “Sulaimonster” in honor of Blue Devils sophomore guard Rasheed Sulaimon ahead of tonight’s big rivalry game against North Carolina. It appears to be some sort of sea serpent with Sulaimon’s head attached.

We’ll see if he and the rest of his teammates feed their appetite for a win tonight.

Technically, Michigan locked up the outright Big Ten regular season title this past Tuesday after defeating Illinois on the road. And while the Wolverines have been celebrating the accomplishment the past few days, Saturday was their first opportunity to cut down the nets on their home court. It didn’t hurt that UM won an incredible game against Indiana, pushing its mark to 15-3 in-conference.

Here’s a Vine of coach John Beilein cutting the last strand and thanking fans for their support. Could we have a repeat Final Four appearance by the Wolverines? We’ll find out soon.

Duke commit Jahlil Okafor, the nation’s top recruit in 2014 according to the ESPN 100, won’t be suiting up for the Blue Devils tonight, but he is at Cameron Indoor Stadium to support his future school and teammates. He’s been making the rounds and taking pictures with the Cameron Crazies. Naturally, this is kind of a big deal on Twitter and Instagram. Fellow Duke commit Justise Winslow and uncommitted recruit Chase Jeter are also on campus with Okafor.

Okafor is already signed to Duke, but I’m sure the atmosphere at Cameron tonight will only reinforce his decision.

Pitt and Clemson are embroiled in an important game at Littlejohn Coliseum, and things aren’t over after the final buzzer. With under two seconds left and Clemson leading 67-65, the Panthers forced a turnover on the inbounds pass, which rolled right to Panther Josh Newkirk, who hit the game-tying jumper.

Based on the video, it is almost impossible to tell whether or not the ball was still on Newkirk’s fingertips when the backboard lit up, but after seeing a number of replays, the referees decided to count the basket.

Many Clemson fans left Littlejohn thinking the Tigers had won. They may want to get back to their seats if they can.

Louisville may only be spending one season as a member of the American Athletic Conference, but they won’t be leaving without some hardwear. After blowing out UConn 81-48, the Cardinals captured a share of the AAC regular season championship, and took home the first ever AAC championship trophy.

The team was quick to grab a photo op with their new trophy:

Forward Montrezl Harrell, who put on a show against the Huskies, got his own photo snapped as well:

The Cardinals will enter the AAC tournament in Memphis as the No. 2 seed, and will face the winner of Rutgers-USF on March 13 after an opening round bye.

The video’s creator, Luke D’Mello, wrote the following in the description of his video about Morgan:

He committed to michigan at a time when the program hadn’t been to the tournament since 1998.

He’s the first michigan basketball player to go to four NCAA tournaments since Dugan fife (not counting sanctions)

He’s been to a final four.

Louisville is making a statement win in the AAC regular season finale, currently leading UConn 69-41, and super-athletic forward Montrezl Harrell is leading the way for the Cardinals. Harrell currently has 20 points and 11 rebounds with under seven minutes remaining, including a few thunderous dunks.

UConn, like many teams, has no one to match-up with Harrell inside. Louisville seems to be firing on all cylinders down the stretch this season, and look like a contender to repeat as National Champions in a few weeks, if today is any indication.

Schools who have moved conferences during this wave of realignment haven’t taken much time to honor their old leagues, and the Maryland-ACC breakup has been far from the most amicable separation, so its a bit surprising to see Maryland pay homage to the league before its final ACC home game.

The Terrapins host regular-season champion Virginia tomorrow, and in anticipation, the school has dressed up the part of the student section known as ‘The Wall’ with the number 61, representing the 61 years that Maryland was a member of the ACC. This is a really nice gesture by the school, especially considering how messy many aspects of Maryland’s departure have been.

Promising freshman Chris Walker has only taken one shot during the affair, but it was probably the most exciting bucket of the first 20 minutes. Here’s video of Walker throwing one down off of an alley-oop from fellow first-year guard Kasey Hill.

Twitter/St. John's

Twitter/St. John’s

Conference realignment has brought some amazing new rivalries to both college football and college basketball, but it’s also killed off a number of longstanding traditions in the sports as well. The Big East Tournament at Madison Square Garden is one event that has been greatly affected by the recent changes to the collegiate landscape.

Stubhub was kind enough to send over some statistics on ticket sales for the six most prevalent conference tournaments coming up next week. When looking at the percentage of overall ticket sales that each conference claims, you can see a huge disparity between last year and this year.

First, some notes:

  • The SEC Tournament is now least popular big-time tournament to purchase tickets for, despite a slight gain in percentage

  • 30% of sales for the Pac-12 Tournament come from the state of Arizona

  • The Big East Tournament represents 13% of ticket sales this year – last year it was at 37%

  • 52% of sales for the Big 12 Tournament, which saw the highest percentage gain (11%), come from the state of Kansas

Here’s the raw data – stats for 2013 are on the left, while stats for 2014 are on the right.

Event % Of 2013 Sales % Of 2014 Sales % +/-
Big Ten Tournament (Indy) 30% 26% -4%
Big 12 Tournament (KC) 9% 20% +11%
ACC Tournament (G’boro) 9% 16% +7%
Big East Tournament (NYC) 37% 13% -24%
Pac-12 Tournament (Vegas) 2% 9% +7%
SEC Tournament (Atlanta) 7% 8% +1%
Other 6% 8% +2%

The obvious cause for drop in the Big East Tournament comes due to the departure of Syracuse, UConn, Louisville and Pittsburgh, which always had large turnouts at MSG every year. The Big 12′s ascension is a little harder to explain, as the conference boasts the same 10 teams and the same venue as last year. Perhaps KU fans are eager to see Andrew Wiggins and Joel Embiid one last time before both take off for the NBA next year.

Could football fans eventually have the option to watch the game as one of the players instead of from the sidelines? If what we’re seeing from Clemson is any indication, it’s an innovation coming sooner rather than later.

Friday, the Tigers Instagram account tweeted out a photo of Clemson’s quarterback helmets, which have Schutt Sports cameras installed right above the top bar of the facemask. The assumption here is that they’ll use the footage to help their signal-callers make better decisions on the field.

It was just a few weeks back that we saw how Stanford utilizes robots to help coach David Shaw attend team meetings. Staying on top of the latest technology is going to be paramount for programs to continue competing in the future.

But before we even get to March Madness, we’ve got a reason to show you it again. A high school team in Ohio pulled off almost an exact replica of the play in the state tournament.

According to ESPN, the play was pulled off by Hiland’s Brennan Coil and Todd Ropp to defeat Tuscarawas earlier this week. The only difference seems to be that Laettner had time to throw a fake in his move, while Ropp had to shoot all in one motion.

It’s surely a moment that he – and any Kentucky fans in the crowd – will never forget.

The Big Ten may pride itself on its physical play, but on Thursday night, Iowa senior Zach McCabe took it a little too far. In the second half of the Hawkeyes’ game against Michigan State, McCabe got tangled up with Spartans junior Travis Trice out on the perimeter. He then used some sort of wrestling move to take him to the ground.

If there’s any coach in collegiate athletics who knows how to deal with an absurd number of injuries to his players, it’s Georgia head football coach Mark Richt. Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo, who has had to deal with the same issue with his Spartans this season, must have figured as much. According to Bruce Pearl, Izzo gave Richt a call for some advice on how to overcome the injury bug. Pete Roussel tweeted the news.

Richt and his Bulldogs overcame the loss of their star quarterback, multiple running backs and numerous defensive players to somehow still post an 8-5 record and a winning mark in the SEC. While UGA was initially supposed to compete for a national title, expectations became a bit more tempered once all of the personnel issues began.

Izzo has had to use nearly 15 different starting lineups this season, In fact, he has played a total of 12 players at least 140 minutes this year – an astounding statistic for such a highly-ranked program. The longtime MSU coach always seems to have things figured out by the time March rolls around – perhaps that’s because he isn’t shy to ask for some good advice?

In the closing minutes of the first half against Northwestern, Newbill, Penn State’s sensational junior, fell on the defensive end of the court, got up, stole a pass and emphatically slammed home the ball with one hand. The dunk put the Nittany Lions up twenty points and they would never look back, cruising to a 59-32 road victory.

We saw it during the botched court-storming just a few days ago with New Mexico State and Utah Valley. Now, tonight, we might be seeing the worst example of all.

After Hawaii coach Gib Arnold was assessed a technical foul during tonight’s game against UC Santa Barbara, a Gauchos fan ran onto the court to confront him. Hawaii’s players had to literally push away the spectator from their coach.

While most of the rule change discussions of this off-season center on the now-tabled “Saban Rule” that would aim to slow down college offenses, the NCAA Football Rules Committee has made a very sensible change to the targeting rule. According to ESPN’s Brett McMurphy, overturned targeting penalties will no longer remain 15-yard penalties against teams. This rule never made much sense, and was one of the most controversial during the season, so it is good to see that common sense has prevailed here.

ESPN college basketball announcer Bill Walton often seems a little out there when calling Pac-12 games for the network. Perhaps that’s because he is out there.

Walton and Dave Pasch had just finished up an interview with Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman (who Walton kept calling Bob Marley) when the camera shot to Andrew Luck, the Indianapolis Colts starting quarterback, who was also in the crowd for the Stanford vs. Colorado game. Art Briles: “What’s Safe About Two Tight Ends, Power Formation With A Fullback?”

While player safety became one of the main talking points about the now-tabled 10-second rule that had dominated college football discussions over the last few weeks, some believe that slower football is in fact more dangerous, since it usually emphasizes physicality and bigger players. Unsurprisingly, Baylor’s Art Briles, one of the premiere coaches of fast-paced offense in the nation, subscribes to this notion:

He has a point. It’s hard to imagine that the “three yards and a cloud of dust” style is not a bit more dangerous or prone to injury than an offense that features one-on-one matchups between smaller players in open space.

Briles is on the record as calling the proposed rule ‘insane’, while another progenitor of high speed offense in Texas, Kevin Sumlin told USA Today that “this is a victory for common sense and protecting the game of football.”

Interestingly, Briles is also set to talk at the Nick Saban coaching clinic after throwing some barbs at the Alabama coach last week.

Ken Griffey Jr. is no-doubt one of the best players in the history of baseball. He’s also appears to be one of the worst interviews in the history of sports.

ESPN anchor Linda Cohn did an interview with Griffey on SportsCenter this afternoon on behalf of Upper Deck that had all the makings of a fun segment. That was, until Griffey’s face was shown on the screen. The 13-time All-Star was clearly less-than-thrilled to be joining Cohn and gave one-word answers to almost every question asked. The clip, which you can watch below, is extremely awkward to sit through. To her credit, Cohn did about as well as you could ask for given the situation.

After the segment started making the rounds, Cohn let her Twitter followers know how she felt about it. She simply wrote “what a waste”. She later added more.

Cohn is very well-respected in the industry and always tells it like it is, so this comes as no surprise. Perhaps we’re starting to see why we see very little of Ken Griffey these days.

Mark Richt Threw Out The First Pitch In Last Night’s UGA Baseball Game

Matt Lombardi

Mark Richt has owned the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on the football field, posting a 12-1 record since taking over as head coach at Georgia. Tuesday, the school figured it’d see if his presence could be the difference on the baseball diamond.

Richt threw out the first pitch of the Bulldogs game against G-Tech – a game that the Bulldogs eventually won on a walkoff, 1-0. According to fans at the event, his pitch was low and outside.

It’s great to see Richt supporting other sports at the university. Tech fans might not agree.

Mack Brown Calls Marcus Mariota The Best Quarterback He Coached Against At Texas

Dan Lyons

Since stepping down at Texas, Mack Brown is spending a lot of time interacting with fans on Twitter and answering their questions about his Longhorns coaching career. Today, a fan asked him who the best quarterback who he faced is, and the answer is very interesting.

Since Brown’s Texas teams only faced Oregon once, in his final game—the 2013 Alamo Bowl—I assume he means Marcus Mariota. Mariota had a solid game against Texas. He was 18-for-26 for 253 yards and a touchdown, but he didn’t have the type of performance that would seem to make him the best quarterback that Brown ever coached against. Even just in the last few seasons, Brown coached against Heisman Trophy winners Robert Griffin III and Sam Bradford. If this answer is accurate, that’s extremely high praise for Mariota.

Of course, Brown could just have a very short memory.

Brace yourselves Penn State fans, we’ve got more controversy in Happy Valley.

Yesterday, ESPN.com’s Don Van Natta dropped a bombshell report on former Penn State assistant coach Mike McQueary that, among other things, alleged that he gambled on Nittany Lions football games while he was a quarterback on the team in the 1990s. While the example cited in the piece was a game against Michigan State in 1996, bettingtalk.com has found a very interesting clip of the end of the PSU vs. Rutgers game in 1995.

Penn State led by 18 points, 52-34, with just over a minute to play in a game that the Nittany Lions were favored to win by 20. McQueary, subbing in for starter Wally Richardson, threw a 42-yard garbage time touchdown to Chris Campbell to the surprise of even his own coaching staff. Scarlet Knights coach Doug Graber was noticeably upset and got into a war of words with PSU head coach Joe Paterno after the game.

Clearly, at this point, McQueary’s actions are being questioned. Is it possible that he had money on the 20-point spread and took it upon himself to win his own bet? Who knows – here’s the clip.

Something tells me this isn’t the last we’ll hear of this story…

Dan Lyons

Rick Pitino has been on a roll with his public statements and press conferences lately, discussing everything from his hatred of social media to recruiting LeBron James in the early 2000s. Yesterday during a press conference, he discussed John Calipari and Kentucky fans, and he was quite complimentary of his coaching rival. As for the fanbase at his old school? Those comments are a bit more interesting.

SB Nation’s Louisville site Card Chronicle transcribed the press conference, which you can in full watch here:

On Calipari:

I don’t think John Calipari is ever leaving Kentucky, because he feels he has the best job in college basketball. Where’s he going to go? He knows the pressure of the NBA. I give him an A as a teacher, a recruiter and a preparer… Kentucky couldn’t get any better than John Calipari. I’m a big believer in the way he teaches and the way he recruits.

On Kentucky’s well-traveled fanbase:

If Kentucky’s fans don’t show up for conference tournaments and things like that, they feel, religiously, like they’re going to hell. No one else’s fans feel like that. It’s like going to church. If they miss a basketball game, the lord will think they’re sinning. They travel really, really well, and that’s the good thing about coaching at Kentucky. The bad thing is that when you lose, everything gets exacerbated.
