It’s week one of college football, so naturally, Michigan and Ohio State are already going at it. During the halftime show of its season-opening game, Michigan decided to poke a little fun at its biggest rival via its band — check out what it formed:

Yes, the Michigan band clearly mocked the iconic “Script Ohio” tradition of Ohio State — Buckeyes fans probably won’t appreciate that one.

What’s a little more fuel on the fire?

The Mark Stoops era at Kentucky didn’t exactly get off on the right foot this evening, with the Kentucky Wildcats falling to Western Kentucky yet again, this time by a score of 35-26.

Bobby Petrino, of course, is thrilled with the win — he also is probably thrilled with linebacker Andrew Jackson, who played a great game, stifling the UK offense. He also had one particularly notable hit on Kentucky’s running back Jonathan George.

Ouch.

Cal may have just pulled off the best trick play of the day. On the team’s opening drive against Northwestern, the Golden Bears faked a field goal and scored the game’s first touchdown. But this wasn’t just any fake – the holder, Jackson Bouza, actually lateraled the ball back to kicker Vincenzo D’Amato, who then lofted the ball over the defense back to Bouza for the score.

ESPN’s College GameDay has announced its next stop for week two of the college football season. After traveling to Clemson this week to watch the Tigers take on the Georgia Bulldogs, the ESPN crew will be heading up to Ann Arbor to watch Michigan take on Notre Dame.

Notre Dame-Michigan has been an incredible series of late, and the last time the two met in Ann Arbor, it was arguably the best college football game of the year , in 2011.

The two teams will be squaring off “Under The Lights ” — a rarity at the Big House.

There’s a good one brewing down in Arlington, Texas tonight. TCU and LSU are facing off in the Cowboys Classic in a serious SEC-Big 12 battle. The Tigers appeared to building a little lead after J.C. Copeland rushed for a touchdown to put LSU up 13-3, but TCU didn’t plan on letting that lead grow.

On the kickoff following Copeland’s touchdown, the Horned Frogs scored a touchdown of their own — return man B.J. Catalon showed a rare combination of speed and elusiveness, taking the kick 100 yards to the house.

Don’t turn away from this one — LSU leads TCU 13-10 early in the 2nd quarter.

Today was quite a day for Notre Dame head football coach Brian Kelly. Not only did he agree to a contract extension with Notre Dame, but he also notched his 200th coaching victory with the win over Temple.

Notre Dame’s Fighting Irish Digital Media released an Irish Connection video after the game. ‘ICON’ is a series that gives fans a look at the game from the sidelines and from inside the locker room. The video has some pretty cool game highlights, but also shows the Irish team honoring Kelly by giving him the game ball, and bringing in his first quarterback from Grand Valley State:

As always, a great video by FIDM .

Towson over UConn. North Dakota State over Kansas State. It’s time to celebrate one more big-time victory for an FCS team during the opening weekend of college football. Eastern Washington has taken down No. 25 Oregon State, 49-46. The Beavers had a chance to tie the game on the final play, but a 52-yard field goal sailed wide right, giving the Eagles one of the most important victories in program history.

We’re hoping to get our hands on some highlights soon.

After years and years, Georgia offensive lineman Kolton Houston finally gets to step onto the football field tonight against the Clemson Tigers. The NCAA had been holding Houston out since 2010, and just this month he found out that he’d be able to play in 2013.

His family stood by him as he battled the NCAA and insisted that he would eventually play. It should come as no surprise that his family is still beside him, and making its presence known in Clemson tonight.

Check out his mother’s wardrobe for tonight’s game:

In addition to a solid on-field performance by the Fighting Irish this afternoon, Notre Dame fans received great news: the school is set to announce its contract extension with head coach Brian Kelly.

Kelly flirted with the NFL this offseason following a loss in the BCS National Championship Game to Alabama — giving him an extension and assumed raise will likely aid Notre Dame in retaining him for the foreseeable future.

It is believed that Swarbrick will announce the details of the contract — at least some of them — once the Temple game ends.

Kelly, prior to 2013, has a 28-11 record while coaching at Notre Dame.

The two-time defending champion Alabama has returned to the gridiron — the Crimson Tide is taking on Virginia Tech in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game at the Georgia Dome. Alabama of course is a heavy favorite, even with A.J. McCarron being spotted in a walking boot yesterday before the game.

Alabama must have decided that it was best to keep McCarron off the field — after stopping the Hokies on their first drive, Alabama returner Christion Jones took a punt 72 yards to the end zone for a touchdown, keeping the offense on the sidelines:

Texas Tech kicked off the season in style tonight, with a nice 41-23 victory over the SMU Mustangs. While the game was out of hand for most of the 2nd half, that didn’t stop the Red Raiders from piling it on.

Late in the 4th quarter, Reginald Davis caught a screen pass from walk-on true freshman quarterback Baker Mayfield, and took it to the house for a score. But this was no easy route to paydirt, as he had to break four tackles and reverse the field to make it happen:

The UConn Huskies were back to their old ways as they defeated St. Francis 1-0 in their season opener, but it was a pair of new faces that led the way for the perennial powerhouse.

UConn was able to down St. Francis 1-0 in Storrs.

UConn was able to down St. Francis 1-0 in Storrs.

Freshman Cyle Larin opened his UConn account in the 24th minute, as he broke free to head home a cross from fellow freshman Kwame Awuah. Meanwhile, Larin, another freshman, hailing from Manahawkin, N.J, threatened the Terriers’ defense throughout the night with both his passing and shooting ability, as he was able to create numerous chances for the hosts.

Both UConn and St. Francis came out of the gates tentative, as opening night jitters resulted in a feeling out process for much of the opening frame. However, senior striker Mamadou Diouf was able to spark the first UConn chance of the evening, as he pushed a shot just wide of the goal.

From there, the Huskies found their attacking flow, as Larin was able to play Diouf through with a through ball that would have been a sure goal if not for the heroics of St. Francis keeper Jack Binks.

However, Larin couldn’t be denied for long as he was able to open the scoring with a thumping header to put the Huskies in the drivers seat.

“When I play in front of a crowd like that, it gets me more excited,” said Larin, whose opening goal was witnessed by a crowd of 3,225 fans. “I want to score because when I score with a crowd like that, the feeling is amazing.”

“The ball came back out from a corner kick and I received it,” said the freshman Awuah, whose assist to Larin proved to be the game winner. “I saw Cyle opening up calling for the ball, so I tried my best to hit it down the middle. It got to him and he scored the goal.”

The second half proved nervy for the Huskies, as St. Francis looked to equalize through the counter.

St. Francis star Kevin Correa almost put the underdogs on the scoresheet, as a 49th minute run got him in alone with UConn keeper Andre Blake. However, the 2013 Preseason All-American Blake was able to parry the shot and prevent the Terriers from a potential equalizer.

UConn also relied on the heroics of junior. defender Dwight Ceballo, who was able to clear a ball off the line to preserve the Husky lead. “They kept pushing and pushing,” said Larin, whose goal ended up proving vital for the winners after a laboring second half. “We got lucky.”

From there, the teams exchanged possession resulting in a few chances, including one that came from a spectacular bit of skill that saw Diouf skip right by his St. Francis defender.

St. Francis got one final chance with less than two minutes remaining, as Correa once again got free in the UConn box, but pushed the shot just wide of Blake.

“We got tired. The game opened up. It was a mess,” said UConn coach Ray Reid. “It was a bit of fatigue. It was a bit of panic. It’s opening night, but this win will get us confidence.”

While the freshman duo of Larin and Awuah proved to be the deciding factor, Reid was quick to dismiss any hype building behind the young stars.

“This guy just found this guys head and they scored a goal,” said Reid, who enters his 17th season in charge in Storrs. “Let’s not crown these two guys. Lets not get ahead of ourselves.”

Despite the opening night frustrations, UConn was able to escape with a win and is now looking forward to a contest with William and Mary Monday night.

Al Golden has some tricks up his sleeve for the Miami Hurricanes this season. The head coach decided to use one of those tricks in the season opener against Florida Atlantic — he pulled out a reverse play that worked to perfection.

The ball was handed of to Duke Johnson, who pitched it to Herb Waters, who rounded the corner and took the ball 63 yards for a score. Waters had to pull off a really nice cutback as well:

Very, very nice.

This one isn’t for the faint of heart.

Southern Methodist running back Traylon Shead took a hand-off out wide tonight against Texas Tech, but was run down before he got to the sideline. Unfortunately, the Red Raiders’ defender grabbed Shead by the collar, dragging him down backwards. During the tackle, Shead’s legs got caught under him, and his knee twisted in a way that it was definitely not meant to.

Shead was laying on the ground screaming, but eventually was able to walk off, although he was limping.

Ouch.

Sure, it’s opening weekend of college football season, and most sports fans have their attention on the gridiron. But if you’re a true Indiana fan, you’ve always got Hoosiers basketball on your mind. One IU fan named Josh Tucker also has Hoosiers basketball on his birthday cake. Check it out:

Okay, now back to college football.

New Texas Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury was apparently less than thrilled with a penalty that called back a Red Raiders touchdown. How can we tell?

If you placed a bet on Michigan State’s first score of the season being a two-player pick six, you just hit the jackpot — the Spartans just had quite an impressive season-opening touchdown. Jairus Jones intercepted a Western Michigan pass and lateraled the ball to teammate Kurtis Drummond, who took it to the house.

Enjoy:

We have a feeling you’ll be seeing this play quite a few times on SportsCenter.

Alabama is heavily favored over Virginia Tech in this weekend’s Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game, considering the Tide won last year’s BCS National Championship Game and have one of the most efficient quarterbacks in the country in A.J. McCarron. But they may have a little issue they’ve stayed mum about ahead of the matchup – McCarron’s bruised foot.

McCarron was spotted by ESPN’s Cole Cubelic getting off of the team bus in a walking boot tonight. Check it out:

It was reported in early August that McCarron had a bruised right foot, but that was over three weeks ago. Is Nick Saban being overly cautious, or do Bama fans have something to worry about here?

One way to strike fear into the heart of the opponent? Cook up and eat their mascot at the tailgate.

Ok, so maybe LSU fans didn’t literally deep fry TCU mascot Super Frog, but you get the point. Jacques Doucet of WAFB took a pretty funny photo of some Tigers fans eating “horned” frog legs at the tailgate before the big game tomorrow night. Check it out:

No, TCU fans. It’s not a good idea to attempt to retaliate in this situation.

While college football is starting up and commanding all of the attention, it’s easy to forget that we’re less than two months away from college basketball.

Today, Kansas State got a nice reminder in the mail about basketball, in the form of rings that it ordered for claiming a share of last year’s Big 12 regular season title — the Wildcats and the Kansas Jayhawks both finished with a 14-4 conference record. The new bling is pretty nice:

The Wildcats aren’t that far away from beginning their quest for the outright title in 2013-14. I’m sure a few players wouldn’t mind getting another one of these next fall.

“It’s friggin’ awesome. The best I’ve ever seen.”

“This is such a blessing man. Not everybody is fortunate enough to have something like this — first class all the way.”

“This is awesome. Just awesome.”

I think it’s safe to say the Huskies like their new locker room.
