Earlier today, Notre Dame football fans received a bit of bad news: wide receiver Davaris Daniels will be suspended for the spring semester for academic reasons. Keith Arnold of NBC broke the news, indicating that while he will be gone for the spring, Daniels would be eligible to compete again in the fall, if he opts to stay in school instead of heading to the NFL Draft.

Daniels, though, wants to be clear — he tweeted out his intentions of playing in a Notre Dame uniform next season:

He also released a full statement to ESPN’s Matt Fortuna:

“I understand that attending the University of Notre Dame is a privilege and with that comes a certain level of academic responsibility. Therefore, I will not be attending Notre Dame in the spring semester but fully expect to re-enroll in the summer semester to earn my degree and continue playing football for the Irish.”

Fighting Irish fans certainly have to be tired of hearing about academic issues among players — Notre Dame prides itself upon putting academics before athletics. But it is good news for Brian Kelly and the football team that this suspension won’t take its leading returning receiver off of the field — Daniels caught 49 passes for 745 yards in 2013.
