Tomorrow, one of the greatest games in college basketball history will have occurred exactly 40 years ago. On January 19, 1974, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish put an end to the UCLA Bruins’ historic 88-game winning streak under coach John Wooden with a 71-70 win in South Bend. The coach of the Fighting Irish at the time of the upset? Digger Phelps.


Tomorrow, on the 40th anniversary of the big win, Phelps will have his name and jersey raised into the rafters on Notre Dame’s Purcell Pavilion at halftime of the game against Virginia Tech. ESPN2 will also be airing a special “88-And-1″ segment tomorrow night at 8:00 rehashing the game, but even those things alone aren’t enough — the network decided to make Phelps a cake for his biggest coaching accomplishment:


Not a day goes by that Digger doesn’t reference the ’74 win over UCLA — it’s undoubtedly his proudest moment as a coach. Tomorrow will be a pretty cool day for Phelps and Notre Dame — congratulations.
