Because one intimidating coaching figure deserves another, Ohio State head man Urban Meyer decided to go as legendary Chicago Bears coach Mike Ditka for Halloween. His wife Shelley tweeted out a photo tonight – it’s actually hard to even tell that it’s Meyer.

The Nevada Wolf Pack basketball team decided it needs to keep up with the football team when it comes to fashion — the hoops players will apparently be ballin’ out in style this fall. Today, senior Jerry Evans Jr. posted a picture on his Facebook of new alternate sky blue jerseys that Nevada will presumably wear this upcoming season, and they are pretty nice:

We’ve seen some fairly amusing sports-related Halloween costumes this year, but this one might take the cake. ESPN’s Israel Gutierrez dressed up as Justin Bieber for ‘Around The Horn’ today. Of course, he chose to mock the ridiculous outfit that Bieber wore to the Miami Heat game earlier this year.

He also wore three different hats. It’s spot-on.

Wisconsin coach Gary Andersen chose to go an interesting route when choosing a Halloween costume this year. Andersen dressed up as one of his own players – presumably Beau Allen, given the hair – and participated in a blocking drill with him in front of the team. The team absolutely loved it.

While he got the best of Allen the first time around, the senior nose guard actually tried the second time and, well, it wasn’t really much of a contest. Check it out:

Something tells me he won’t be suiting up against Iowa this Saturday. Let’s hope he keeps the mullet though.

Former USC head coach Lane Kiffin doesn’t currently have a job, so it’s entirely possible that he’s out tonight with his kids trick-or-treating. It’d be pretty funny if he ran into himself in the process.

One USC fan took a photo of himself dressed as “unemployed Lane Kiffin” – visor and all.

Kiffin, of course, was unceremoniously fired in September after over three seasons with the team. It looks like fans are still happy with the program’s decision.

Time flies when you’re having fun — we’ve already reached Week 10 (!!!) of the college football season. By now, we know who most of the national title contenders are, and it’s going to be incredible race to see who makes the BCS National Championship Game.

This weekend brings us another nice slate of games, although there are only three matchups that feature two ranked teams. There is no question which game is the headliner, as No. 7 Miami takes on No. 3 Florida State for ACC supremacy — the winner will also pick up a huge victory for its BCS resume.

Here are our picks for this week’s games:

Ashley is probably happy.

Ashley is probably happy.

The Kentucky Wildcats, despite not reaching the NCAA Tournament in 2013, will be ranked No. 1 in the preseason AP Poll for 2014. That’s what happens when you land a recruiting class complete with five of the top ten players in the country.

The past two years have been a roller coaster ride for UK fans. In 2011, the Wildcats won the NCAA title in putting together one of the most dominant seasons in recent memory. But last year, despite another impressive recruiting class, Kentucky struggled most of the season and bowed out in the first round of the NIT against Robert Morris.

Michigan State, Louisville (last year’s champ), Duke and Kansas round out the top five. Here’s the entire list, which was just released:

1. Kentucky

2. Michigan State

Yes, Louisville forward Kevin Ware is back on the court just seven months after breaking his leg this past March. But no, that doesn’t make it okay to make light of his injury for Halloween. One college basketball “fan” is dressing up in a Ware jersey with a fake wound, complete with the bone sticking out. ESPN’s Darren Rovell tweeted it out earlier today, but it was taken down soon after. One of his followers was able to screenshot it, however:

Needless to say, this isn’t cool. This guy better hope he never runs into Ware himself on the street – or any Louisville fans either, for that matter.

Last week, Fighting Irish running back Cam McDaniel cemented himself into Internet lore when the below photo, taken during Notre Dame’s game against USC, went viral. As you can see, McDaniel lost his helmet mid-play, yet still somehow looked like he was posing for GQ.

Fans immediately made the connection to the movie Zoolander – because, well, anytime anyone mentions anything to do with male modeling, that’s what comes to mind. Today, we learned that in a strange coincidence, McDaniel was actually watching the movie the night before the picture went viral. Rachel Turlep took video of McDaniel’s teammate, Troy Niklas, asking him about the look. He also compared it to “Blue Steel.”

Pretty funny stuff. Maybe he’ll make a cameo in ‘Zoolander 2′. You never know…

All things considered, Tennessee is having a pretty solid season in 2013. It’s the first year of the Butch Jones era, and the Volunteers entered the season on a three-year streak of sub-.500 records. Tennessee is currently 4-4 (and sports a win over a South Carolina team that was No. 11 at the time), which isn’t terrible when you consider the absolutely brutal schedule the team has played.

In fact, Jones talked this evening a bit about how he embraces the challenge of a tough schedule, but he thinks that his team may be facing one of the hardest of all time:

peak

Schedule via ESPN.com

While the Vols have faced a couple of cupcakes, Butch has a point — Tennessee has also played a bunch of really, really difficult games: It’s good to see that Jones and his team aren’t backing down to the schedule — many others would whine and complain that a slate that loaded is unfair and far too much for any team to handle. Tennessee fans have to be pleased with the progress that the Vols are showing, and should be really excited about the future under Butch Jones — it’s clear he has embraced the challenge in front of him.

This weekend, the Philadelphia Eagles travel to Oakland to take on the Raiders. Besides pitting two of the most ferocious fan bases in sports against each other, the game will also feature two famous Pennsylvania high school stars. Both LeSean McCoy and Terrelle Pryor are PA kids (their high schools are a little less than three hours apart), and today McCoy was asked if the two ever knew each other from way back. His response was gold:

Of course, Pryor was at Ohio State during the infamous tattoo scandal — he himself said he “was kicked out of school” because of it. McCoy was just giving Pryor a hard time about OSU’s recent reputation and reiterated that it was a joke.

Later, the media told Pryor of McCoy’s comment, but he just brushed it off:

It looks like Pryor is still having a hard time escaping that Ohio State past.

George played his college ball at Fresno State, and he wanted to show some love to the Bulldogs fans that supported him in his time at the school. So he decided to buy all of the tickets to Fresno State’s home opener against Cal State-Northridge on November 16th to give away free to fans:

All fans have to do is print off a voucher to claim a free ticket. The Save Mart Center has a listed capacity of 16,162, so George definitely had to reach into his pocket to make the giveaway happen. Good for him though — it’s always nice to see pro athletes give back when they can.

UCLA has an extremely talented football team in 2013, but right now, the Bruins have hit a rough patch. UCLA climbed as high as ninth in AP Poll to start the season, but has now suffered back-to-back to losses to very good Stanford and Oregon teams. The major issue in the two losses was the offense — the Bruins only scored 24 points in the two games combined.

Offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone realizes he needs to get things back on track quickly — he also realizes that he probably isn’t the most popular guy right now. Today he had a pretty funny quote regarding his approval rating:

I think that is maybe a bit harsh, but Mazzone is right in realizing that he needs to get the offense clicking. The Bruins look to rebound and get back on the right path against Colorado on Saturday.

sexandsecretss.blogspot.com ® Spurrier On Clowney In Coverage: “Every Time We Do That, Something Bad Seems To Happen”

Jadeveon Clowney was once believed to be the undisputed number one overall prospect for next year’s NFL Draft. Now, midway through the college football season, that projection seems a bit less likely, as other players have stepped up, and Clowney has underwhelmed a bit, partially due to significant injuries. Clowney will still be one of first guys off of the board in April, but he certainly has competition for the top spot.

Clowney’s greatest strength is his ability to relentlessly rush the quarterback. His combination of speed and strength makes him nearly unblockable at times. However, teams have recently started to run in his direction more, and in the odd situations where Clowney has dropped into coverage, opposing quarterbacks have not been afraid to test him. But that isn’t going to happen anymore — Steve Spurrier said today that the defense is no longer going to drop Clowney into space:

This is probably a good adjustment for the Gamecocks to make, and should help them continue to build on their recent defensive success. It’s time to just let Clowney does what he does best.

Nick Saban: “I’ve Never Considered Joining Twitter, Nor Do I Understand Why Anyone Would”

Matt Lombardi

You probably won’t be shocked to hear this, but Alabama coach Nick Saban has no interest in joining Twitter. When asked today at his weekly press conference about whether he’d ever join the social media platform, he dropped a fairly amusing quote on the audience:

Saban also went on to say that there is no official policy regarding his players using Twitter, but that they’re all made aware of what they can/can’t tweet. He said the program does its best to monitor what the players are putting out there as well.

Some coaches feel that connecting with their players on social media and staying current is important. Clearly Saban doesn’t – and clearly it hasn’t affected his program’s success. Still, who wouldn’t love to see a #SabanSelfie before game day?

It’s been a while since we’ve heard from ex-Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson, but today he finally made a public reappearance. In a feature with Sports Illustrated‘s Andy Staples, Golson opened up about the academic infraction that got him kicked out of Notre Dame for the fall, and then he talked about his desire to return to school and how he never considered going JUCO or switching to another university.

The most notable portion of the interview was the discussion between Golson and Staples on the “poor academic judgment” that Golson previously said he displayed — the quarterback decided to elaborate a bit:

“Basically I had poor judgment on a test, it wasn’t due to poor grades on anything.”

“Did you cheat on a test?”

“Yeah, it was something like that [...] test situation.”

Here’s video:

Golson is just a few months away from making his academic return to Notre Dame in January — he is very eager to put the past behind him and move on from his mistakes.

By now, you’ve undoubtedly seen the final play of the Missouri vs. South Carolina double-overtime thriller from this past Saturday night. Andrew Baggett, the Tigers’ sophomore kicker, missed a 24-yard field goal from the left hash, sending the Gamecocks and their fans into euphoria. While Baggett has received his fair share of criticism for the gaffe, many have pointed out that his holder failed to make sure the laces were out before the kick. South Carolina’s kicker, Elliott Fry, seems to agree.

It’s nice to see one college kicker – especially the one on the other side of the result – standing upon for another. As Fry mentions, it wasn’t long ago that he was criticized for a similar miss.

Dabo Swinney Says He’ll “Be Surprised” If Sammy Watkins Doesn’t Bolt For The NFL This Year

Matt Lombardi

Clemson junior wide receiver Sammy Watkins has been a special player for the Tigers for the three years he’s been on campus. His coach, Dabo Swinney, doesn’t seem to think Watkins will be signing up for a fourth go, however. Swinney told reporters today at his weekly press conference that he’ll “be surprised” if Watkins doesn’t move onto the pros after this season. Swinney also believe that the standout wide receiver should be a top-10 pick in the NFL draft.

Watkins has put up some impressive numbers in his collegiate career – during his freshman season, he caught 82 balls for 1,219 yards. He also leads the Tigers this season with 58 receptions and 813 receiving yards. He certainly has the potential to be a top-10 pick, as Swinney believes, but he’s projected more in the 15-20 range by most scouts. We’ll find out soon enough if Swinney’s projection is correct.

This past summer, Notre Dame’s top receiver made headlines by swimming with sharks. But TJ Jones, now a captain for the Fighting Irish, wasn’t just going for a wild dip on vacation; he’s very much interested in a professional career as a marine diver. He spent part of the summer down in Florida seeing what it’s like working at an aquarium, and was able to take a number of dives into the shark tank .

Of course, the staff at SeaWorld (the place where Jones dreams of someday working) is now supporting TJ and the Fighting Irish — today, SeaWorld sent Notre Dame and TJ a video of divers holding “Go TJ!” and “Go Irish” signs under water:

Jones is definitely one of the most unique wide receivers in college football, and it’s pretty cool that he has SeaWorld on his side. It seems like his dream job could become a reality very soon if pro football doesn’t work out — if it does, that dream may just have to wait a bit longer.
