This past Wednesday night, it was reported by The Daily Mississippian that numerous Ole Miss football players partook in the heckling of student actors putting on a performance of “The Laramie Project”, a play about Matthew Shepard’s murder. Allegedly, the football players, among others, used “borderline hate speech” and the word “fag” in reference to the actors, one of which is gay. Today, the school announced that all in attendance, including 25 football players, will be required to complete an “education dialogue session” at the university. Hugh Kellenberger of the Jackson Clarion-Ledger was the first to report the news:
He also says that the school will not issue further penalties without new information:
It’ll be interesting to see how the media reacts to the punishment and whether it’s deemed severe enough. The Rebels travel to Auburn tomorrow for a night game against the Tigers – as it stands, it appears they’ll all be making the trip.
