Auburn’s Gus Malzahn On Whether He’s Reached Out To MSU Coach Mark Dantonio: “No, But I Need To”
Despite defeating two-time defending BCS national champion Alabama and winning the SEC Championship Game this season, Auburn still needed help in the final few hours of college football’s regular season to finish in the top two of the final BCS standings and play for a title of its own. Michigan State came through just after midnight on Sunday morning, knocking off Ohio State to launch the Tigers into the No. 2 ranking that they needed to play for it all on January 6th.
Auburn coach Gus Malzahn apparently says he’s going to reach out to Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio – presumably to “thank” him for helping them out.
Of course, Dantonio and his players had their own motivation for defeating Ohio State – a Big Ten title. In the process, they gave the SEC a chance at an eighth straight BCS trophy – something that looked very unlikely after Alabama’s loss to the Tigers. Perhaps SEC Commissioner Mike Slive should also give Dantonio a ring…
