Coming off a season in which his Kentucky Wildcats didn’t make the NCAA Tournament, it appears that John Calipari needs a little inspiration to get his team back to the promised land. Naturally, he sought out the manager of the current best team in Major League Baseball, Clint Hurdle of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Hurdle knows all about turning a bad team into a contender — the Pirates haven’t had a winning season since 1992, but currently sport the league’s top record — quite an impressive turnaround. It appears that Calipari is in Pittsburgh for tonight’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals, and he took a picture with Hurdle:

Pirates fans are probably hoping that Calipari also gives Hurdle some advice on how to win the big one — if the Pirates snapped the longest streak of losing seasons in professional sports history by winning the world series, Pittsburgh might explode.

Either way, pretty cool that the two sports figures are hanging out — by the looks of it, they are sharing hairstyle secrets too.

Watching college football from at home on your couch is about to get even more enjoyable. NBC had already announced that it will be using “freeD” technology for the NFL’s Sunday Night Football this upcoming season. Now we’ve heard that the technology will make its first college football appearance in Notre Dame’s Shamrock Series game vs Arizona State at Cowboys Stadium:

So what is this “freeD” stuff? It’s technology that allows for 360 degree replays that can be sped up, slowed down, and turned every way possible during a game, all while maintaining great picture clarity. You can check out an awesome demo video by Replay Technologies here .

The only sad thing about this is that we only get one college football broadcast (that we know of) with this technology this year. But if it ends up being as cool as we expect, all major networks will be getting on board with this soon.

“Locker room material” is one of the most overused phrases in sports. Players and coaches often have enough motivation to succeed without having to hear what the enemy has to say about their team or program. But there are exceptions.

Earlier this offseason, we showed you Alabama’s weight room, which has pictures of Texas A&M’s logo at the top of every pull-up bar and the Aggies’ Cotton Bowl performance on loop on the televisions. Now, we’ve got another example – this time at Michigan State.

Back in May, Michigan AD Dave Brandon made waves when he took a few shots at his in-state rival on the radio station WTKA-AM. Here’s the quote, from mlive.com.

“Brady said, ‘They’ve got a field, it’s 100 yards long, there are goalposts at either end — we’re going to be just fine, not a big deal. We can win there as easily as we can win at home.”

Yeah – pretty strong. Well, it appears the Spartans are using Brandon’s words as motivation for the upcoming season. SpartanNation.com’s Hondo Carpenter posted a photo of the quote hanging at one of Michigan State’s football buildings.

Earlier this week, it was reported that the ADs of the two schools can’t come to a decision on a potential future night game between the teams. It looks like things might be heating up in this rivalry.

Clearly, Wojciechowski is implying that Scheyer’s “office” is a stall in the bathroom – pretty funny. I’m not sure if Wojo is implying that there is an inside joke about Scheyer’s habits hidden in here, but either way, it’s quite a way to kick things off with his new coworker.

Last night, the NCAA officially ruled that UCLA transfer Eddie Vanderdoes would be eligible to play during the 2013 season for the Bruins. The decision has left Notre Dame fans irate – as Vanderdoes signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Irish.

Well, it doesn’t look like Notre Dame’s coach is too thrilled about the ruling either. Here’s what Brian Kelly had to say in a statement, via Eric Hansen of the South Bend Tribune.

Not shocking, given that Vanderdoes burned the Irish in this situation. Is Kelly right to complain, or should he just move on?

Ohio State coach Urban Meyer is finally opening up about the situation involving his star running back, Carlos Hyde. Meyer told ESPN that Hyde was suspended for “not walking away” and that if charges had been filed, the tailback would have been dismissed from the team. For those wondering, Hyde was involved in an altercation with a female two weeks ago – he was a person of interest in an assault case.

Tough to argue with Meyer on this one – domestic issues are no joke. As it is, Hyde has been suspended for at least the first three games of the 2013 season. Hopefully this will be the final chapter in this unfortunate story.

Two years ago, the University of Oregon unveiled new football facilities that blew away the rest of the country — if for whatever reason you haven’t seen the tour video, or need a reminder, you can check it out here .

Safe to say, the Ducks probably had enough amenities to last a lifetime, but that didn’t stop the university from building a new Football Performance Center that would be equally impressive, costing a mere $68 million. Today, the new center was opened and unveiled, and it will blow you away. Below is a photo gallery of the center, via GoDucks.com :

My favorite things? The kitchen with the phrase “Eat Your Enemies…And The Other Food Groups” is pretty nice, but so is the barber shop right next to the locker room. I’m pretty surprised that the Duck mascot didn’t get its own new nest as well. No doubt, the Oregon football facilities are second to none.

Did NCAA Ruling In Vanderdoes Situation Ruin The National Letter Of Intent? sexandsecretss.blogspot.com

sexandsecretss.blogspot.com ® Did NCAA Ruling In Vanderdoes Situation Ruin The National Letter Of Intent?

Late last night, the NCAA may have set a dangerous precedent. In what has been a big story on the national recruiting scene for the past several months, the NCAA finally issued a ruling on incoming freshman defensive lineman Eddie Vanderdoes — he is eligible to play immediately in 2013 for the UCLA Bruins.

Now, here’s a little background on the situation if you aren’t familiar. Vanderdoes is a 5-star defensive lineman from Placer, California, and was one of the most coveted prospects in the 2013 cycle. Vanderdoes originally committed to USC, but then decommitted to join the Fighting Irish. On National Signing Day, he signed his National Letter of Intent to play at Notre Dame.

Not too long after that, he decided that Notre Dame wasn’t the place for him, and he wanted out. Vanderdoes was interested in staying closer to home , and figured UCLA would be a better option for him. The problem? He wasn’t free to go, because of the letter of intent he had signed. Notre Dame insisted that since Vanderdoes had signed to play there, he either had to come fulfill that obligation, or transfer under a normal process, which would require him to sit out the 2013 football season if he wished to attend in another school.

In other words, Notre Dame wanted Vanderdoes to play by the rules set down by the NCAA, and would not freely release him from his letter of intent.

Here’s a refresher on the NLI, courtesy of the NCAA :

The National Letter of Intent was created to protect both schools and student-athletes. When a student signs that letter, he/she must attend that institution — the school is guaranteeing them an athletics scholarship, one that the school must honor, and in return the student must attend the university and participate in whichever sport he/she is receiving said scholarship for — it’s a great deal for both parties. It’s also the final, formalizing step in which a commitment is irrevocable — the legal contract that says “if I change my mind in the future, I will have to accept the consequences.”

Again, the NCAA ruled yesterday that Vanderdoes would not have to live up to the end of the bargain that he signed — he is eligible to play for UCLA immediately. The reason that the NCAA approved? Vanderdoes was looking to remain closer to home near his ailing grandmother .

Now let me say, I have absolutely no problem at all with Vanderdoes making the switch to a school to stay close to his family — that is a very understandable move. However, if he wants to make that move, he should have to face the repercussions of abandoning Notre Dame. Did he not know how far South Bend was from Placer, California when he signed the National Letter of Intent? Come on now.

Furthermore, the NCAA agreed with a reasoning that doesn’t make logistical sense. Los Angeles is roughly 450 miles from Placer, California, Eddie’s hometown. Yes, UCLA is closer to home for Vanderdoes than South Bend, but it’s not likely that the school switch is going to allow Eddie to visit his family regularly anyway, at least not if he’s participating in all of the team’s workouts and practices.

Bottom line, this story feels like Vanderdoes just changed his mind again (remember, he first committed to USC), and is using a mildly exaggerated excuse to not have the face consequences for his actions. It’s just sad that the NCAA is allowing him to get away with it. Again, I have no problem at all with him opting to go to UCLA, but he should have to sit out a year, plain and simple.

If players don’t have to honor their National Letters Of Intent, it would essentially mean that teams could recruit right up until the start of fall practices, which would be terrible, causing tremendous headaches for coaches. Do I think that because of this ruling, that will happen? No, I don’t. But I do think that you could see more recruits across the country try a last-minute switch each year, if they think they’d have a shot to play immediately.

Ultimately, the NCAA decided not to uphold the rules that it created, and Vanderdoes is free to play. The real loser here is Notre Dame, which handled everything the right way, and got burned. What message does that send?

The Carlos Hyde drama for Ohio State came to an end tonight – for the most part. Earlier today, it was announced that no charges would be filed against Hyde for his alleged role in a reported assault at a Columbus bar, but head coach Urban Meyer announced that he would suspend the running back for at least the first three games of the season.

Hyde took to Twitter with a simple response, from the Bible:

The verse in question reads: I can do all this through him who gives me strength.

Nothing Hyde can do now but move on, work hard, and stay out of trouble. Reading the Bible is probably a pretty good start.

Earlier this spring, top recruit Eddie Vanderdoes angered the Notre Dame faithful by backing out of his National Letter of Intent and informing the Fighting Irish that he would be transferring to UCLA to remain close to his family — despite the fact that UCLA is still roughly seven hours from his home in Placer, California.

It was expected that Vanderdoes would have to sit out a year under normal transfer rules, but UCLA and Vanderdoes appealed that decision — today, Rick Kimbrel, formerly of Rivals.com, is reporting that Vanderdoes has been given the go-ahead to play in 2013:

If true, this is a huge win for the Bruins — Vanderdoes is a former 5-star talent who is expected to make an immediate impact. On the flip-side, Notre Dame fans will be furious, considering the NCAA just ruled that signing a NLI essentially meant nothing in this case.

College football is always changing. Long gone are the teams of three yards and a cloud of dust. Also gone are the sweet leather helmets, deferring to their chrome counterparts. Next up? Teams are ditching the hard-copy playbook.

That’s right, the football playbook is going digital for teams, most notably the Georgia Bulldogs. In fact, each player on the Georgia team gets their own iPad with the playbook loaded in:

Admittedly, this is much more convenient for the players, and could allow them to interact with the playbook more often. However, we’re sure that people will be crying foul and that the school is using the playbook as an excuse to gift players iPads. As long as they do have a specific school and football use though, I have no problem with them.

Somehow, Watson received a ring that read “SEC Champions” instead of “ACC Champions” – seriously. Well, today, Watson finally got a ring with the correct conference embossed.

College football coaches everywhere are getting tired of hearing how bad their respective conferences are compared to the SEC, and it appears that they believe that time is almost at an end. Last week, Nebraska’s Bo Pelini boasted that many SEC teams actually wish they were Nebraska , and he’s probably not wrong. Today, Jimbo Fisher is joining the discussion as well:

Not sure if I agree that the ACC is catching the SEC overall, but it’s true that some of the ACC’s top tier teams, such as Florida State, can very much hang with the SEC, as evidenced by the Seminoles-Gators rivalry each year. I think college football fans would love to see an ACC-SEC challenge started in football every year, or any conference challenge for that matter — somebody make it happen.

College football fans love night games. It makes sense — having your team in prime time gives the school more exposure, and lets you really kick back to watch the game without having to worry about mowing the grass afterward. It also builds anticipation and excitement for the matchup — late games are often the best games of the day.

However, it appears that one man isn’t a huge fan of night games — or hosting them at least. Today, at the B1G AD golf tournament , Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon shot down the idea of a Michigan-Michigan State night game in Ann Arbor, citing that it is “not a good idea”, according to Nick Baumgardner of mlive.com.

However, Michigan State AD Mark Hollis thinks it would be fun:

“From our perspective, night games add a new dimension. We’ve had very good success here with Notre Dame and Boise in the past. We always listen, and then we determine which way to go.”

Brandon’s thoughts revolve around the rowdiness and intensity of the rivalry — giving fans another eight hours to booze up before the game could potentially lead to a lot of easily avoidable problems.

Personally, I agree with Hollis — a night game between the two programs would be a whole bunch of fun. Having been at Michigan for Notre Dame-Michigan under the lights in 2011, I can attest that Ann Arbor can successfully play host to a night game with a serious rival. I’d like to see this night game happen, even if it must take place in East Lansing, which is still being discussed.

The top overall running back in the state of Kentucky won’t be playing for the hometown Wildcats. Instead, Damien Harris will join 5-star wide receiver George Campbell as the second highly-ranked position player to commit to the Michigan Wolverines for the class of 2015.

Harris committed today on Twitter. Campbell was the first to congratulate him.

This is a big get for coach Brady Hoke’s program. Harris chose Michigan over Kentucky, Florida, Illinois and others. He is ranked as one of the top running back recruits in the country.

Next Media has provided us some seriously funny animation videos poking fun at high-profile figures. Today, they are at it again with another Johnny Manziel video. First, NMA made fun of Manziel for leaving the Manning Passing Academy. Now, they created a video trolling him for his weekend adventures which consisted of getting thrown out of a frat party at the University of Texas, wearing a Tebow jersey, and responding to the hate via Twitter:

How long is this series going to last? No idea, but I can’t wait until we get a full-length feature.

This past week, the fans down in Tennessee went crazy when EA Sports appeared to leak the new Volunteers uniforms. Tonight, we get to take a look at the real deal courtesy of a man named Charles Mullins — here’s a photo of UT commit Austin Sanders standing next to them:

Here you go Tennessee fans — what do you think?

Thankfully, this “special” model is for an auction and these won’t be used in games. But wow, that is one rough-looking helmet.

Johnny Manziel Responds To Twitter Troll With A Photo Of His Heisman Trophy sexandsecretss.blogspot.com

Well, folks, it appears that Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel has finally had enough of all of the criticism being thrown his way. Manziel took to Twitter this afternoon to let off some steam, taking on multiple trolls at once.

His best response? How about tweeting a photo of his Heisman Trophy with the phrase “you’re that mad bro?”?

Manziel also went after other detractors, including Matt Hayes of The Sporting News.

Manziel needs the college football season to start, like now.

By now, you’ve probably seen the video of Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel getting thrown out of a Texas frat party. Some of the attendants were a bit hostile, telling Manziel to “get the f*** out”. Well, it appears that at least one college football player is sticking up for the much-maligned quarterback – Georgia offensive tackle Austin Long.

Manziel sent out a few tweets this morning in an attempt to get his fans’ focus back on football. Long’s response, which is an add-on to another UGA student’s invitation, was awesome.

Honestly, it’s nice to see another college football player – especially one from the SEC – sticking up for Manziel. Unfortunately, unless Texas A&M and Georgia match up in the SEC Championship Game, the Aggies won’t visit Athens.

Johnny Manziel likes to party just like every other college kid. Sure, he probably shouldn’t get caught smoking or drinking underage , but it appears that he isn’t too bothered by what others think of him.

At SEC Media Days last week, he told everyone over and over again that he was going to enjoy college like a 20-year old, and that none of his off-field drama would affect his football performance.

Today, he took to Twitter to stick it to his doubters:

I stand somewhere in the middle on this. On one hand, Johnny does have a point — he did win a lot of games in the SEC last year, and claimed the Heisman Trophy in his first season of play (although didn’t win a championship) — both impressive feats. However, at some point these incidents, particularly drug and alcohol related ones, could affect his on-field performance, or availability if his coach decides to take action.

I like Johnny — he’s a very charismatic guy and he’s a treat to watch on the football field. I just wish he would keep his head down a little more and focus solid on what he says matters — double-digit win columns and championships.

This one is pretty cool. Vanderbilt wide receiver Jordan Matthews made it in the newest magazine edition of Sports Illustrated, and he’s pretty excited about it. This is what he posted on Twitter:

I love hearing that he appreciates being in the magazine, because it really is a great honor that probably is a dream for a lot of young kids. And he’s developed into a pretty good player, so it’s a dream come true that he has earned for himself.

Great stuff. In the words of The Notorious B.I.G. — “It was all a dream, I used to read Word Up magazine” :

Alabama freshman defensive end Dee Liner was ranked as the one of the best players in the entire 2013 class. Without having even played a down on the football field, Liner has found his way into the news.

Liner posted a photo of himself and his friends with wads of cash with the hashtag #StruggleOverWit. Check it out:

My first thought? Alabama coach Nick Saban is going to go ballistic. My second thought? Why do college football players keep doing this?

Since Maurice Clarett led the Ohio State Buckeyes to the BCS National Championship in 2002, he’s had an interesting life. He tried to challenge the NFL’s age limit (unsuccessfully), was drafted by the Denver Broncos into the NFL (only lasted one month), was convicted of robbery, was arrested after a high-speed car chase, and was imprisoned for four years. And apparently, through all of it, he’s remained loyal to his college coach – Jim Tressel.

Clarett posted a photo of a tattoo of Tressel to his Instagram account Sunday morning. It’s not yet known whether the ink is his – but you get the sense that he still thinks very highly of his coach – he hashtags #livinglegend.

Tressel works in the Akron athletic department, after he was let go by resigned from Ohio State after the tattoos-for-autographs scandal. How ironic.

Who’s ready for some AAC football? The Memphis Tigers are. Today, we got a look at the new conference patches that the Tigers will have on their football jerseys:

They look like a perfect fit — it will be interesting to see how the Tigers transition to the new conference. Only a little more than a month until we get to watch the AAC coin flip and some football.

The Chicago Cubs have a huge fan base in the Midwest, and the organization needs to reach out to just about all of those fans to fill the Wrigley Field stands in late July during what has been another down season. One of the promotions the Cubs came up with was Big Ten Night — which occurred this evening.

For Big Ten Night, the Cubs gave away team hats of 12 different color schemes — one for each school in the conference. Fans can now support the Cubbies in pretty much every color — here’s a photo tweeted out by ESPN’s Darren Rovell :

It’s a pretty cool promotion, but I bet a lot of Ohio State, Nebraska, and Indiana fans will get confused with Reds supporters soon — that will be pretty maddening considering Cincinnati is a division rival.

We may have to designate a section of College Spun just to creative cakes — combining sports fandom with super artistic food seems like it’s becoming quite a trend. Today we came across this awesome groom’s cake of Nebraska’s Memorial Stadium in Lincoln:

I always wonder how bad somebody feels when they have to cut into one of these — definitely seems like a crime to me.

Is it better than last week’s Alabama cake ?

It appears Johnny Football may have finally gone too far. After video surfaced earlier of him getting kicked out of a Texas frat party, it is now being reported by Barstool Sports that Manziel was also caught smoking weed this weekend as well while out partying — here’s a photo:

If this turns out to be true, Manziel might be facing a suspension — there is now photo evidence of him smoking and drinking (underage). Maybe he shouldn’t just wear his Tebow jersey , but start acting like Tim too.
