While the Charlie Strong era at Texas has technically been under way for a few months, we’re now starting to see some of the changes he’s talked about making come to life. One example? On the first day of the team’s offseason strength and conditioning program, players were given “Put the T back in Texas” shirts, which include four words on the back – toughness, trust, togetherness, and teamwork. Here’s video of the Longhorns practicing in their new gear, via ESPN.

As you can see in the video, Strong also participated in the tug-of-war drills, which comes as no surprise. After all, the most searched for term on Google regarding coach Strong is the word “jacked”.

Only time will tell if Strong is able to resurrect a program that has the talent and name brand to compete for a national championship every season. It looks like he’s off to a good start.

The below video may not directly involve college basketball, but it’s still interesting nonetheless. Bears sophomore center Isaiah Austin posted an Instagram video of five of his Baylor teammates getting baptized at the university earlier this week.

Baylor, for those unaware, is a Baptist university. Austin also wrote the below message about the event:

Florida State Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Jameis Winston is…still a goofball. Winston, who is also a relief pitcher for the Seminoles baseball team, videobombed ESPN’s pre-game broadcast of the team’s opening day by doing “the robot” in the background. John Calipari Thinks The SEC Should Get “5 Teams, Maybe A 6th” Into The NCAA Tournament

Matt Lombardi

Kentucky coach John Calipari has a much different view on SEC basketball than many of the sports’ top analysts. While that may not come as much of a surprise considering the Wildcats reside in the conference, it may shock you to hear how many teams Cal thinks the league deserves to send to the NCAA Tournament.

UK’s coach told reporters after the team’s loss to Arkansas that he believes that the SEC should get “five teams, with maybe a sixth” into the big dance. His statement came after he was asked about the conference being a “two-team league”.

With Florida as the top-ranked team in the country and Kentucky posting a solid enough record to be considered a lock, the league will definitely get at least two bids. After that, you could make arguments for Georgia, Arkansas, LSU, Tennessee, Ole Miss and Missouri to be included. Joe Lunardi, ESPN’s bracketologist, currently projects the SEC with three teams – the third being Tennessee as one of the “last four in”. While it’s certainly possibly that any of the above teams could get hot and find themselves with a bid, it’s unlikely that three or four of them do so.

Former college basketball coach Bob Knight, who now does the color for some of ESPN’s broadcasts, thinks you’re terrible at math. Usually, it’s some absurd offensive play (a dunk), that makes the highlight reels for Ohio State junior forward Sam Thompson. Thursday night, against Penn State, it was just the opposite – Thompson made an incredibly athletic defensive play that has Buckeyes fans talking. Late in the first half, Nittany Lions guard Tim Frazier drove the lane and tried to throw up a floater over Thompson. It did not work.

Thompson rejected the shot so hard that the ball wound up literally on the other side of the court. Penn State retained possession, leaving us to wonder – why doesn’t he just catch the ball instead?

It would be hard to make a better highlight tape from a season than Talladega College guard Brandon “Snap” Peters did in just one game against Fisk University. The footage, featured on the Youtube Page for “Team Flight Brothers“, shows the six-foot guard draining a half-court shot to beat the buzzer at the end of one period, and a crazy between-the-legs dunk on a fast break later on. Snap may be an NAIA player, but these are some division one, high major highlights.

Critics of Tennessee men’s basketball coach Cuonzo Martin grow louder by the day, despite the fact that the Volunteers are tied for fourth in the SEC and very well may make the NCAA Tournament. Vanderbilt coach Kevin Stallings thinks that is ridiculous, and isn’t afraid to call out Martin’s critics:

“For people to speculate on his job is absurd… It used to be, in this business, that guys got four or five years to show what they can do. The only thing that’s changed is people thinking they ought to have more of a say in that, and then weak athletic administrations giving into that kind of pressure.”

Martin is 55-39 at Tennessee, and currently in his third season, but he’s yet to lead his team to the NCAA Tournament. The pressure is building even more, as some people in the media have begun to discuss Bruce Pearl, whose show cause penalty ends in August, returning to UT.

This past Saturday, Kentucky’s Julius Randle, against LSU, scored the game-winning basket on a broken play that, in all honesty, was a bit fortunate. Coach Cal has a very simple explanation for it: Josh Fleming brought them the luck they needed.

Fleming, who suffers from a serious heart condition, spent a day-and-a-half with the Wildcats as part of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. He got to shoot around with the team, watch the players practice, and even wear his own UK jersey with his last name on the back. He was also able to sit court-side for the game against the Tigers, which went down to the wire. He then got some praise from Coach Cal himself at the post-game press conference for being the difference in the contest.

Duke is one of college basketball’s biggest ratings draws every year, but the Blue Devils have been dominating ESPN this season. Duke Basketball released this infographic on Facebook today, revealing that three of the top four college basketball games on ESPN this season have featured Duke. Interestingly, two of the top three were the epic Duke-Syracuse match-ups.

dukeespn

If we’ve learned anything from this, it is that the ACC really needs to find a way to match up Syracuse and Duke twice a year. As long as Jim Boeheim and Mike Krzyzewski are on the sidelines, that game is a major draw. It probably won’t ever be bigger than Duke-UNC from a historical standpoint, but if this year is any indication, it may get close.

ACC rivalry games have certainly not let us down this year. Tonight’s UNC-NC State game had one of the stranger finishes you’ll see this year. After an off-ball foul allowed TJ Warren to knock down two free throws to tie the game and send it to overtime with just 1.6 seconds left, the momentum seemed to be all-NC State. The Wolfpack jumped out to a quick 77-71 lead in overtime, but UNC battled back, and guard Marcus Paige, who finished with an eye-popping 35 points, hit a game winning layup with 0.9 seconds left on the clock to shock the ‘Pack.

UNC survives, pushing its winning streak to ten games.

John Calipari always has fun with the other SEC schools that Kentucky travels to, because so many of them promote Kentucky as their schedule’s premiere game (which is usually fair) and break out all kinds of t-shirt giveaways. It looks like his rival from an hour or so west on I-64 has similar feelings about Louisville’s place in the AAC.

Louisville still has road games at Memphis and SMU left in the season. No word yet on whether or not those two teams will be doing any special promotions for their games with U of L, but it is a bit funny that Pitino made that statement when Louisville made Memphis its “white-out” game this season.

Luckily for Pitino, the ACC has plenty of “white-out” worthy programs, so the honor should get spread around with Duke, Syracuse, and UNC in the league. Weird, you’d think Coach Pitino of all people would embrace more chances to wear this.

Duke Fans Settle With Syracuse-Area Radio Station After Ejection From Carrier Dome

Dan Lyons

One of the stranger stories to emerge from the February 1 classic between Syracuse and Duke at the Carrier Dome is that of Shane Hackett and Leslie Gilman, two Duke fans who were thrown out of the game late in the second half by a reportedly-overzealous usher.

The two were livid after Syracuse had offered to refund their parking and $95 per ticket. The couple claims that they paid a mark-up price of $500 for each seat at the game, and they were planning to take legal action against the school.

Today, Syracuse basketball’s flagship radio station stepped in and saved everyone from any legal recourse. Hackett joined the “Gomez, Dave, and Lisa” morning show on TK99, during which the station offered him $500 if he and his fiancee agreed not to sue the school, and agreed to not attend any more games at the Dome.

As for the usher who caused this mess, Syracuse has said that they’ve taken disciplinary actions after hearing about the issue.

It’s good to see that this situation, which had been getting a lot of press in Upstate New York, has been settled. It is a little strange that it took a local radio station to do it, but if everyone’s happy that is all that matters.

Brandin Cooks can absolutely fly, as evidenced by his combine-best 4.33 40-yard dash, but he may find his wallet weighing him down a bit now. Cooks’ performance won him Adidas’ adiZero Challenge. The Oregon State receiver takes home $100,000 for his efforts. Combined with the impact on his draft stock, it’s not a bad time to be Brandin Cooks.

Ever the company man, Washington quarterback and Adidas athlete Robert Griffin III congratulated Cooks on his win via Twitter:

Cooks can afford a new pair of sneakers or two now, that’s for sure.

Golfer Steve Elkington Makes “Handbag Throw” Joke About Michael Sam On Twitter sexandsecretss.blogspot.com

sexandsecretss.blogspot.com ® Golfer Steve Elkington Makes “Handbag Throw” Joke About Michael Sam On Twitter

Matt Lombardi

Australian professional golfer Steve Elkington may not want to check his Twitter mentions today – not after what he himself has tweeted Tuesday morning. Elkington, who is no stranger to controversy on the social media medium, went after both ESPN and Michael Sam. Sam, of course, is attempting to become the first openly gay player to play in the NFL this upcoming season. He’s been going through the drills at the combine this week, trying to impress league scouts.

His joke about the “handbag throw” is particularly offensive.

I’ll stop short of going all holier-than-thou here, but it’s obvious that Elkington is a bit out of line here. He’d probably have been better off keeping these thoughts to himself.

Kansas Releases “Decade Of Dominance” Hype Video With Coach Howard Doing The ‘Nae Nae’

Matt Lombardi

Kansas’ defeat of Oklahoma last night means that the Jayhawks have clinched at least a share of the Big 12 men’s basketball regular season title for the 10th year in a row – a ridiculous statistic any way you slice it. KU fans at the game did their best to acknowledge the feat, creating some clever signs for the ESPN cameramen to find. Tuesday morning, the school itself put out a “Decade of Dominance” hype video to celebrate the occasion.

Of course, it involves assistant coach Jerrance Howard doing the “Nae Nae”.

With the conference title locked up, KU will now turn its focus to putting itself in position to grab a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. The Jayhawks will probably need to win the Big 12 tournament to reach that goal, but they’re certainly going to be the favorite.

Rich Rodriguez Sends Snarky Tweet About Proposed Pace-Of-Play Rule From Golf Course

Dan Lyons

Rich Rodriguez has been extremely outspoken against the proposed college football rule that would slow down the pace-of-play, effectively ending true hurry-up offenses. On Sunday evening, while playing a round of golf, Rodriguez took to Twitter to send out a tweet reaffirming his stance on the hot-button issue, in response to proponents of the rule like Arkansas’ Bret Bielema who have cited player safety as a reason to slow down the sport.

It looks like Rodriguez may have taken some inspiration from Oregon offensive coordinator Scott Frost, who made a similar joke about the proposed rule change a week earlier. Arizona and Oregon feature two of the fastest offenses in the country, so its no surprise that their coaches want this rule change shot down.

It’s hard to know whether Syracuse guard Trevor Cooney even knew whether Tyler Ennis was cutting to the basket during the play below, but regardless, it’s easily the most impressive assist of tonight’s SU vs. Maryland game.

With the Orange leading 38-30 midway through the second half, Cooney lost the ball on a drive, only to have it punched back his way as he fell to the floor. He then either tried to save the ball from going out of bounds or saw Ennis streaking to the hoop out of the corner of his eye. Via SBNation’s Jared Smith:

SU appears to have rebounded nicely from the debacle at Duke this past Saturday, but we’ve still got 10 minutes of action left.

Torrey Smith On Clowney: “He Is Too Big To Be That Gifted”

Matt Lombardi

It isn’t just football fans who are in amazement at the 40-yard dash time Jadeveon Clowney put up at the NFL Combine Monday. Even some NFL players are in awe. Check out what Baltimore Ravens wideout Torrey Smith tweeted out earlier today. For the record, Smith ran a 4.43 second 40-yard dash back in 2011.

But as you can see, Smith still doesn’t think Clowney will be able to catch him on Sundays. While I doubt the two are ever going to line up against each other pre-snap, perhaps they’ll find each other in the open field at some point. Smith would be wise to try and avoid that kind of situation.
