Syracuse fans and alumni have been getting geared up for months in anticipation of Saturday’s first conference game against ACC power Duke, and even one of the well-known Orange alums in the country is ready to support his Orange.

Biden attended Syracuse’s College of Law, and remains an ardent supporter of his alma mater, and can often be spotted at Syracuse games when they play in the Washington, D.C. area.

UConn avenged a shocking December loss to Houston last night in a big way, knocking off the Cougars 80-43 at Gampel Pavilion. CBS Sports’ Steve Lappas broadcast the game along with Andrew Catalon, and he didn’t seem too pleased about having to sit through the blow-out. Shortly after wrapping the broadcast, CBS cameras lingered at Gampel for a few moments, and Lappas was caught voicing his displeasure:

Someone needs to get quicker on cutting those mics!

37-point games are no fun for anyone, aside from maybe some UConn fans last night, so it’s hard to really take exception with what Lappas said.

While Duke is the school most famous for students camping out for basketball games, Syracuse students have been doing the same for years, except instead of sleeping out in North Carolina weather, Orange fans have to contend with the frigid Central New York winters. Syracuse has had a long break between home gamesthe last game at the Carrier Dome was January 18 against Pittsburghso students have been camping out for Duke for two weeks, a few of which had dipped into negative temperatures.

Today, Jim Boeheim, Mike Hopkins, and members of the cheerleading squad stopped by to thank the campers at “Boeheimburg.”

The appearance caused a bit of a stir among the Syracuse faithful:

Randy Moss Says He Would Still Choose Notre Dame Today

Dan Lyons

Randy Moss’ college history was a bit tumultuousthe star receiver started his career at Florida State before transferring to Marshall, where he ultimately finished his career and became a top NFL pick. Before choosing either of those schools, however, Moss signed his letter of intent to attend Notre Dame and coach Lou Holtz. Moss never played at Notre Dame after having his enrollment denied following a high school fight, but he remains loyal to the Irish.

In an interview with Fox Sports, Moss said that if he had to go through the recruitment process again, he’d still choose Notre Dame:

“If I could do it over again, Notre Dame would’ve probably still been there… It’s an experience I’ll never forget. That was my team.”

Another interesting tidbit in Aaron Torres’ story comes from another one of Moss’ top three schools, Tennessee. Moss was recruited by Super Bowl quarterback Peyton Manning, who wanted to make the high school star a Volunteer receiver:

Some kid named Peyton Manning drove back to campus during a weekend away just to host the visiting hot-shot recruit. “Peyton was in Virginia, and he came back to take me to a basketball game,” Moss said. “I don’t know how long the drive was, but I know it wasn’t 15 or 30 minutes.”

Players are usually very loyal to their alma maters, so it’s interesting to see Moss speak so highly of a school he never attended.

Kentucky Ranked As “Top Local Fan Base” In College Basketball

Matt Lombardi

The state of Kentucky certainly loves its college basketball. According to a recent Nielsen study, Kentucky and Louisville are the two biggest “local fan bases” in college hoops, with Syracuse, Ohio State and Memphis rounding out the top five. Nielsen counted anyone who “watched, attended or listened to” their local team in the past calendar year as a fan. UK came in with a ridiculous 67%.

One obvious theme here is how solid each of these programs has been over the past decade. The other, for four of the five, is the lack of an NBA team (Memphis has the Grizzlies) nearby to compete with. Ohio State’s number may actually be the most impressive however, given how much support the football program receives.

Former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow, who will be transitioning to television in the coming year, was never able to sign a contract with a pro football team this past season. And while you can be sure that he’s upset about that fact, it would appear that he’s at least able to poke fun at himself.

Friday, T-Mobile released two new commercials starring Tebow. The pitch? T-Mobile doesn’t make customers sign contracts, which allows them freedom. In the spoof, Tebow is able to save puppies, deliver babies, walk on the moon, take on world peace, find a Yeti, star in an action flick and become a rock legend – all because he wasn’t bound to a contract.

Kudos to both T-Mobile and Tebow for the obvious marriage here. The only person who won’t like the campaign is Skip Bayless.

JR Smith is known for putting on some absolutely wild offensive displays from time to time, and tonight he did just that against the Cleveland Cavaliers. He had numerous victims, but at the top of the list were Anthony Bennett and Tristan Thompson — both were on the receiving end of vicious crossovers (Thompson actually fell on his butt) that led to impressive buckets. Check out the pair of highlights below via gifdsports — you may want to watch them a few times:

Sometimes it seems like a great idea to try to draw a charge under the basket to help your team. Unfortunately, that idea doesn’t run smoothly 100% of the time — nobody found that out more than Monmouth’s Collin Stewart tonight. Monmouth took on Marist, whose 6-foot-5 guard Chavaughn Lewis can sky with the best of them — he showcased that on one ridiculous posterization of Stewart, who found himself lying flat on his back looking up at the rim afterward:

Eastern Kentucky basketball doesn’t get a ton of run on Sportscenter, but tonight against Tennessee-Martin guard Marcus Lewis tried to see if he could make a highlight reel or two. Lewis finished with 19 points in the 89-66 win, and he did it in style, throwing down a number of ferocious dunks against the Skyhawks:

Lewis averages 10.9 points per game for EKU, good for third on the team, but he has to be first in huge slams after his performance against UT-Martin.

At halftime of Thursday night’s basketball game between the two schools, Malzahn accepted the James E. Foy, V – ODK Sportsmanship Trophy, handed out to the winner of the football game each year. For those of you that missed today’s stunner of a game between Grand Rapids Community College and Kalamazoo, we’ve got you covered. With 17.5 seconds remaining, the Raiders trailed the Hornets by three with the ball — not only did Grand Rapids’ Arthur Pearson hit a clutch three to tie it up nine seconds left on the clock, but the Raiders actually managed to get a chance at the buzzer after a stop, too. Courtney Hill had to pull off an incredible mid-air catch-and-shoot combo to get the shot off in time, and he executed to perfection — game over.

One of the most unique uniform combinations of the bunch belongs to Michigan State. This Saturday against Georgetown, the Spartans will once again wear a script look, but this time the uniform will be completely bronze.

Now, the Kevin Durant shoes that will accompany the uniform have been released — the Nike swoosh looks a little more gold than bronze, but they are still pretty nice kicks:

Nike has been preparing to shake things up again when it comes to college basketball uniforms, and this afternoon we just got a peak at what the company has up its sleeves. Nike has been working on new ‘Hyper Elite Dominance’ uniforms for a number of schools — Michigan State, Kentucky, Ohio State, Duke, Syracuse, North Carolina, and Oregon — and man do they look good.

Here’s a photo of the uniforms, via Nike PR director Heidi Burgett:

We had showed you a look at the Ohio State uniforms earlier today, but this whole line is quite spectacular. There’s a mix of throwback script looks, oversized logos on the bottoms, and of course, flashy Oregon Ducks wings on their shorts. It’s been a busy day in the uniform department for Ohio State, as new shorts and gray jerseys have been leaked online. First, Land-Grant Holy Land’s Andrew Lind tweeted out these “throwback” shorts:

Shortly afterwards, The Buckeye Room passed along images of new gray jerseys that were sent along from Nike:

According to Land-Grant Holy Land, these two articles seem to be parts of new throwback uniforms, and based on the colors, there may be both gray and red versions coming this year:

A Nike source confirmed to our Andrew Lind earlier today that none of the jerseys worn by Nike schools this season in the same style as the ones worn by Michigan State a week or so back would be true “throwback” uniforms, and that “fauxback” is probably a more accurate term to use… These uniforms would certainly fit that description, although as they’re gray and the shorts were scarlet, it’s very possible Nike produced two versions of the uniforms (which is rather common practice in their and Ohio State’s dealings).

As we move into February and the heart of Big 10 play, it will be interesting to see when the Buckeyes unveil these new threads on the court.

Cal’s Justin Cobbs had a pretty good game last night — the guard finished with 21 points, three assists, and three steals in an overtime loss to the Arizona State Sun Devils. Unfortunately, there’s probably one shot on his mind today that could have been the difference-maker — on one breakaway early in the second half, Cobbs missed an uncontested, point-blank layup after he came up with a nice defensive play.

But not only did he miss the layup, coming up short…he also got the ball stuck between the rim and the backboard. On the bright side, the possession arrow went to Cal, so at least his team ended up getting the ball back:

Playing against UCF at CFE Arena, Jackson found himself ahead on a breakaway and tried to silence the Knights’ crowd with a vicious windmill jam. There was only one problem: he missed the dunk.

Hawke had to reach out to Miles with a fake account (because his now-fiance follows his real one, of course, and she would have known what he was up to) but his plan worked perfectly:

Before becoming the starting quarterback of the Seattle Seahawks as a rookie, and leading the team to the Super Bowl this season, Russell Wilson had a standout college career at both North Carolina State and Wisconsin, where he transferred to play out his final year of eligibility. Naturally both programs claim him as their own, so this billboard that was recently put up in Raleigh with Wilson’s Super Bowl appearance on the horizon is probably causing a bit of a stir.

Syracuse Coach Scott Shafer Is Getting Blasted On Twitter After Insensitive Tweets About Atlanta

Syracuse coach Scott Shafer is getting absolutely annihilated on Twitter Wednesday afternoon after tweeting out a set of insensitive remarks about Atlanta’s handling of the recent snowstorm, which left thousands of motorists stranded in their cars overnight and students sleeping on cold gym floors. Many are also citing rumored fatalities from the events, but those have yet to be confirmed.

Screen Shot 2014-01-29 at 2.21.17 PM

Shafer, whose current hometown is snow-covered for nearly half of the year, thought it’d be a good idea to poke fun at how southerners were handling the situation. It backfired, big time.

While some of the people tweeting at him are a bit ignorant about how bad SU’s program really is (the Orange has won bowl games in three of the past four years), it’s hard to argue against that 56-0 whooping that Georgia Tech put on them.

Shafer has since deleted his tweets, but you can find them here. It’s a safe bet that we’ll see an apology very, very soon.

Update: Shafer deleted his controversial tweets but later addressed the situation. He says that there was “no harm meant” to those affected by the storm. He had been taking serious heat from college football fans earlier in the day.

Earlier: Syracuse head football coach Scott Shafer has famously embraced the Central New York community, including the massive amounts of snow that the city receives every year. He’s made the term “hard-nosed” his personal catch-phrase when describing the people of Syracuse, and what he hopes for his team.

Of course, Shafer also wants to compete on the field, and with a few days left until signing day, he found himself in Atlanta trying to pull in some southern football talent. When a snowstorm that was light by Syracuse standards effectively shut down the city for the day, he was none too impressed:

With Super Bowl ticket prices coming down these past few weeks, true fans are finding it easier and easier to finance a trip to the Meadowlands this Sunday for the big game. For one man, Mike Harris, it meant that he could give the gift of a lifetime to his mother, a huge Seahawks fan. Harris posted a video of his mother opening a Fedex package with the stubs – as you can imagine, it gets pretty emotional.

Harris posted some backstory to the YouTube page – here’s a snippet:

After a 9-7 finish in the 1983 season, the Seahawks made their way to the NFC Championship by beating Miami in the Divisional round of their first playoff run (after knocking off Denver in the Wild Card round). That night, mom wanted to go to Boeing Field to welcome back the Hawks, like I know a lot of people will be planning to do after this Sunday, but my dad wouldn’t let her go. She was pregnant with me, due in three months. She missed that opportunity, and the Hawks went on to lose to the hated Raiders that year….

Thanks to a random headline I saw out of the corner of my eye after giving up hope, myself, essentially my mom’s second son since I was five years old who she rarely gets to see anymore, and most importantly mom herself are heading to see the Seahawks play in the Super Bowl. Mom was there for the send-off of the Seahawks in person, with no clue of what was coming. She came to my house to see me and my dogs, and the FedEx guy arrived and I signed for the package. I opened it, and handed it over to her. Thirty years after she skipped their welcome home for my sake, I was able to return the favor in the biggest way I could ever think of.

Props to Harris for making it happen – you never know when your team is going to get back to the Super Bowl. For some fans, it’s never happened.

Former Nebraska Cornhuskers quarterback Taylor Martinez is busy rehabbing from a foot injury sustained last season as he prepares for the NFL Draft, but in the case that his professional football career doesn’t work out, he has a very solid backup plan: designing phone apps.

Martinez has made iPhone games before , and recently he unveiled his latest creation, a simple game known as Tiny Ninja Jump . The object of the game is to “get from start to finish as fast as you can by sliding down the hill while performing tricks!”

And here’s a very strange promo video for the app:

CBS Sports currently has Martinez listed as the 33rd-best quarterback prospect in this draft class, so it may be a long-shot that he gets selected in May. However, video game designing is hardly the worst fallback option.

Syracuse basketball has been breaking its own college basketball single-game attendance record for years now, and when Duke showed up on this year’s home schedule, the question wasn’t whether or not last year’s mark of 35,012 for Georgetown would be topped, but what the number would end up being.

Famous Syracuse apparel store Manny’s seems to have broken the news on what the new record will be, releasing these shirts for this weekend’s showdown between the two ACC powers:

Some predicted that this year’s mark would top 36,000, but it looks like Syracuse still has some room before it hits that mark. This number tops the previous record by 434. A few thousand fans are going to be sitting incredibly far away from the court, and Syracuse has pondered whether or not to move the court in the middle of the Carrier Dome’s football field, which could allow the school to pack in upwards of 50,000 fans for a basketball game. Until then, expect Syracuse to continue to push the limit with the current layout.

First we saw Budweiser’s new Super Bowl commercial, now we’ve got UConn’s new mascot – puppies are taking over right now. Wednesday morning, the school introduced its newest member of the family, a nearly three-month old Siberian Husky named Jonathan XIV. UConn released a video of the new pup doing cute things, like playing with a tennis ball and staring into the camera with sad eyes.

There’s also a shot of him with his “big brother”, Jonathan XIII. Fans will immediately notice the difference in color between the two.

The new mascot was obviously chosen for his resemblance to the school’s new logo. UConn fans – what do you think?

Tonight at Maples Pavilion, the Stanford Cardinal will look to give undefeated Arizona its first loss of the 2013-14 season. The Wildcats are off to their best start in school history at 20-0, but Stanford isn’t planning on giving them a warm welcome — no, they “won’t even know what him them”, according to possible the strangest promo/hype video of all-time from Stanford athletics:

You may still be mesmerized by Tekele Cotton’s ridiculous posterization of Illinois’ John Jones one week ago, but you might want to snap out of the daze — he managed to wow another Wichita State crowd tonight against Loyola. Early in the game vs. the Ramblers, Cotton showed off his ability to fly when he went up and high-pointed a Nick Wiggins pass for a picture-perfect alley-oop:

Seriously, Cotton would make a fantastic wide receiver.

John Calipari Says Kentucky Wasn’t Prepared For “Energy, Viciousness” In Loss To LSU

Dan Lyons

Following an 87-82 loss to 13-6 LSU, Kentucky head coach John Calipari was very brief with the media. Calipari only fielded a handful of questions after the game, and skipped out on his usual post-game radio spot, but he did have this explanation for the Wildcats’ inability to keep up with the Tigers:

After the game, Calipari wasted no time in leaving the Maravich Center:

Kentucky seemingly did its best, and then worst, to try and get back into the game against LSU in the final few minutes Tuesday night. After Aaron Harrison hit three straight 3-pointers to bring the Wildcats back within five (they trailed by 12), the Tigers were allowed to run off the final 13.5 seconds on the game clock without being fouled. Both the announcers and UK fans were stunned:

While it’s understandable that Kentucky’s players were trying to get a steal or a turnover for the first few seconds, they clearly needed to adjust that plan once those precious moments had passed. I’m sure we’ll hear from Coach Cal – soon – on whether this was his fault or his players not following directions.

Creighton got a major scare from St. John’s at home, but in the end college basketball’s most prolific scorer came up with the big play.

Red Storm point guard Rysheed Jordan hit two free throws to tie the game at 60 with only 11 seconds left in regulation. Creighton moved the ball up the floor and swung it around before finding Doug McDermott, who had just enough space to bury a long, off-balance three pointer to win the game:

Doug McDermott finished the game with 39 points on 15-for-26 shooting, and added six rebounds for good measure. If you’re not watching McDermott this year, you’re missing the final few months of one of the great college scorers in recent memory.
