We Are Somehow Just 4 Results Away From An Alabama vs. Auburn BCS National Championship Game
This guy would have a tough decision.
It was just two seasons ago that college football fans saw SEC foes LSU and Alabama meet in the BCS National Championship Game. Don’t look now, but we’re less than a handful of results away from having another all-Southeastern conference national title game. It’d be a fitting ending for the oft-criticized Bowl Championship Series.
How can it happen? Here are the four results that would produce an Iron Bowl BCS title game.
- Auburn defeats Alabama at home this upcoming Saturday in a close game
- Florida State falls in the ACC Championship Game
- Ohio State loses to Michigan State in the Big Ten Football Championship Game
- Auburn wins the SEC Championship Game
Excluding non-AQ schools, it’d leave no team in the country undefeated. Auburn winning the SEC would mean that it most likely defeated Missouri, knocking the Tigers out of the picture. Florida State and Ohio State, coming off of losses, would almost certainly not be considered for the BCS title game. It’d come down to Alabama’s one-loss resume against that of Clemson, Oklahoma State and Michigan State. The Tide would only have a loss to then-No. 1 Auburn. Believe it.
To be fair, the odds here are low. Auburn defeating Alabama, while unlikely, is possible. Ditto on Michigan State over Ohio State. But Florida State should be able to handle whichever school (probably Duke) wins the ACC Coastal division. All that being said, we’ve seen crazier things happen late in the college football season.
If it does happen, it’d guarantee that either Auburn or Alabama had won the past five BCS national titles. It’d also make the rest of the country even more excited about the move to a four-team playoff in 2014.
