It was a long 26 day process following the firing of Rob Chudzinski, but the Cleveland Browns have finally reeled in their next head coach, former Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator Mike Pettine:
Pettine accepted the job today after the Browns were reportedly rebuffed by a number of other NFL coaches, many of whom may have been turned off by the quick firing of Chudzinski, who was let go after one season. Pettine is well known for his prowess as a Pennsylvania high school coach in the late 1990s, before joining the Baltimore Ravens staff in 2001. Pettine joined Rex Ryan’s New York Jets staff as defensive coordinator in 2009, and moved to fill the same position with Doug Marrone’s Buffalo Bills last season. He is reportedly trying to take Bills linebackers coach Jim O’Neil with him to be defensive coordinator in Cleveland:
Pettine has received good reviews from players who have tweeted about the hire:
Marrone also congratulated Pettine on his new job in a statement today:
“I want to take this opportunity to congratulate Mike on becoming the Browns new head coach and thank him for all of his time and efforts with our team this past season. He did an excellent job of improving our defense and we wish him the best.”
