Report: South Carolina Two-Sport Athlete Bruce Ellington Declares For NFL Draft, Will Miss Basketball Season
South Carolina Gamecock Bruce Ellington is a rare two-sport athlete whose two seasons overlap. Now, his pro football aspirations will lead him to miss the remainder of his final season of USC basketball.
Ellington, who is coming off of a huge bowl game performance Wisconsin in which he caught six passes for 140 yards and two touchdowns and threw a touchdown on a reverse to quarterback Connor Shaw, was also one of Frank Martin’s top players in a rebuilding basketball program. He was the Gamecocks’ third leading scorer with 9.9 points per game last season.
Ellington released a statement thanking his South Carolina coaches and the fans who supported him in both sports:
“I would like to thank Coach Spurrier, Coach Horn and Coach Martin for giving me the opportunity to play both football and basketball at South Carolina… I also want to thank all the Gamecock fans and my teammates for the past four years in Columbia. It’s been a great experience and I’ve been truly blessed.”
