The general reaction to the hiring of Charlie Strong for the head coaching role for the Texas Longhorns has been pretty positive. Strong has a very good track record of success, and will look to bring a tough new attitude to the Longhorns that the team has been missing the past several seasons.
However, not everybody is pleased with Charlie Strong getting the position. Big-time Texas benefactor Red McCombs in particular is extremely unhappy with how the whole hiring process was handled — first off, he was a big fan of Mack Brown , and if Brown wasn’t going to remain the head man, his preferences were for Nick Saban or Jon Gruden. Today, McCombs appeared on The Blitz, and ESPN Radio program out of San Antonio, and he did just a bit of venting:
I’m sure that being excluded from the hiring process wasn’t fun at all for McCombs, but judging by his reactions to the hire, this is exactly why Steve Patterson left him out of the search — he had already made up his mind. Ultimately, despite being disappointed with Strong, McCombs said he would support the new coach:
The easy answer to all of this? Strong just has to win, and win big, and he’ll win over any doubters that he has in Austin.
