Kentucky’s Calipari: “It’s No Fair For My Team” To Have To Play Michigan State So Early

The Kentucky Wildcats have really, really high expectations for the 2013-14 season. But John Calipari doesn’t necessarily expect success to come right away, mainly because he is working with so many newcomers. The Wildcats have nine freshman on this year’s roster, and most are expected to play a role on the court. In fact, Coach Cal took to Twitter today to remind the Big Blue Nation that this team will have to work out a few kinks.
Calipari has also been complaining a bit about UK’s schedule and how it doesn’t set up well for his team. Specifically, he’s not thrilled about playing Michigan State so early in the season — the two programs square off this coming Tuesday. Coach Cal made an interesting remark to Jerry Tipton of the Lexington Herald-Leader :
“The issue becomes playing teams (like Michigan State) this early is not fair for my team. It may be fair for everybody else. But it’s no fair for my team.
[...]
Our program is not traditional. It’s just not traditional in the sense everybody stays four years. So it’s not fair when we walk in and everybody else is more experienced.”
While it’s easy to see the point that Calipari is making, nobody is going to feel bad for Kentucky. The Wildcats face the “problem” of having so many freshmen due to the insane amounts of talent they recruit and ship off to the NBA each year. Calipari may have to teach 18-19-year-old kids how to play as a team each season, but having the most talented kids of the bench is hardly a bad deal. Most coaches just dream of the talent that Kentucky has at its disposal.
We’re all looking forward to next week’s early-season showdown between the Spartans and the Wildcats. It should be a great game, and if the Wildcats do happen to lose, it certainly won’t be because the game was unfair for Kentucky.
